“Tasty and cheap grilled chicken - good local atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2012

This place is nicely located next to the gorgeous river, and is everything you'd expect from a traditional Iberian restaurant, right down to the mute TV up high in the corner being watched by nobody! The chicken was just 7.50 and came with nice fries and salad, and was very nicely cooked, I also indulged in the homemade chocolate mousse - guilty pleasures! Definitely try it out, it's less touristy but very friendly.

“Good Local Cuisine”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2012

We had one portion of lovely boiled prawns between two of us here on our first night in Tavira, followed by a marvellous arroz de mariscos (seafood rice), also between two. The ambience was charming, very Portuguese. This place is well worth a visit. We had a good bottle of wine, from the Algarve, and some cheese and olives. We paid €57.

“Tradition on the menu.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2012

Very authentic preparation and presentation of some of the Algarve's classic dishes. Pork with clams, superb. Octopus rice, yummy. Average wine list thobut and the ones listed were a little overpriced. It was early season so we can understand and accept that.

“Good basic local eatery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2012

This restaurant is a step-up from the more basic local restaurants, with slightly more welcoming decor (although the frieze on the wall is a little disconcerting). It offers a good range of basic local food, simple grills of meat and local fish and we really enjoyed our meals. The service is friendly and efficient and it is very good value. This is a popular restaurant with locals and tourists alike.

“Where locals eat...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2012

Joao Bilho in tavira is an unpretentious looking place serving good food - seems popular with locals. Enjoyed an octopus salad (with quite simply delicious tomatoes - but that seems to be the case all over the Algarve) followed by grilled bacalhau with onion and garlic sauce. J had grilled prawns, no starter - with wine, water and coffee - spent the best part of 50 euros .
