I stayed here just before Chrismas 2012 for a week and had a great time. I wanted to stay somewhere where I could relax and chose very well. The hosts are two very friendly people who could not have been more friendly and considerate to me.
The place is set in a nice valley, surrounded by hills. During my visit I walked around the local area and the views of the landscape from the hills are a treat.
I stayed in the main house near the swimming pool and the room was fine. The windows in the bedrooms have those nice wooden shutters. The room was clean and well looked after.
Overall the place is very quiet so you can wind down and just enjoy it. Sometimes you can hear a farmer nearby crossing the hills with his goats and you can here the bells they have on. Living in a busy city and not used to any of this, this sight and sound was very charming.
Being the Algarve, there are also some very beautiful places nearby and if you stay for a few days, you should get a car hired. I went to Tavira for a few days after one of the hosts kindly hired a car for me and it was even delivered to the Herdade da Corte for me. Tavira is a nice town and has a little indoor market where you can buy local produce. This was a gem that was recommended to me by Francisco, one of the hosts at Herdade. I got some really nice local honey from there. Shortly after I arrived Francisco went over with me some of the main local places along the coast road that would be worthy of a visit.
Based on this one day I drove to a lovely village/beach/nature reserve location called Cecela Velha.
When I stayed it was just still warm enough for shirtsleeves and very warm by English winter standards. Only on a few days did I need something warmer on. A few mornings I was served breakfast on the balcony outside, which overlooks an orchard area. Everyone refers to the fresh orange juice with breakfast and it is really nice. It was a sweet variety of orange and just right for me. The carob bread is also worth trying and addictive! Local honey is also available for breakfast and this too was excellent. Guests are also served nice coffee in the morning.
I have to say something about the evening meals. I ate at the Herdade each evening and the food was wonderful. I had various meals including a homemade fish pie (well actually everything I was served for the week was homemade), a great cheese salad and there was a particular cheese that was recommended with jam and it was exquisite. Some of the meals were prepared by a local lady who did the fish pie but the hosts served up some lovely food. I appreciate well cooked food and I had no complaints whatsoever. There were three courses every night and it was very reasonable in price for this level of quality food and service.
I had wine most evenings but you can also have beer or port and other beverages.
A couple of days I just sat around the pool and used the honesty bar to get served some ice cold chilled orange juice.
One final thing. Being in a rural portugal, the skies are very dark and being a lover of the night sky it was a pleasure to see so many stars. Jupiter was in the night sky all December and it shone like a light bulb over the Herdade da Corte. The Milky Way was also abundantly clear.
The hosts were telling me they have had some very good evenings when a band plays on the balcony and its sounds a real occasion. I would like to try that sometime on a nice warm evening!
Overall I was delighted with the Herdade da Corte and would happily return there.
