We holiday in the Iberian peninsula twice a year for a month each time, staying in approximately 30 hotels. I only put pen to paper for the ones that I find disappointing.
When we arrived at this establishment at 1pm the two staff had great difficulty booking us in. I also asked for a sandwich from the menu. The two middle aged ladies were not communicative and made it clear that they didn't understand me. They then continued with their own meal preparations.
We sat at the pool relaxing until 3pm. During that time we could here the two women having a blazing row, then some time later very loud laughter. They sat in the reception in rather a relaxed manner, feet outstretched without a care in the world.Although I had pointed at the item on the menu, easily understood, they couldn't or wouldn't facilitate a sandwich.
On hearing the sound of a car they both picked up laundry items and started to look busy.
The owner had returned and after ten minutes I asked him if we could have a sandwich (10euro by the way). He was extremely rude, using a raised voice, to a guest (!!!!) and asked me why I was asking him at such a time in the afternoon for a sandwich. He had no english but I understood his spanish. Why have a hosteria in the middle of no particular place if you don't provide service?
An hour his wife arrived explaining immediately that he had family problems. I explained that we had asked the maids for a sandwich - she replied that that was impossible!!! Listen I said could we have one now. The whole explanation from her was convoluted in the Argentine way, that it took 40 minutes to tell us nothing helpful apart from I had made a mistake. Now the maids were speaking some english .... eureka!
I asked about internet access as there were two signals from the house. I explained the open access one was v weak. Her reply "why are you working on holiday?". The access was so poor I had to sit in the dark around the back wall next to the dog pound to get a weak signal that dropped every minute.. Internet access should not be advertised if it barely exists.
Rather than acknowledge a problem with the rudeness of the staff she went on to pressure us into taking a meal that night. The atmosphere for us was ruined, but would she take no for a answer?
It's sad to have family problems but also sad to involve guests, and a faux pas to pressure guests, after abusing them, to eat with you in an empty soulless restaurant.
If these people wish to be in business then the customers will respond to charm not aggression. If they wish to be in the middle of nowhere to keep there property purchase costs down, then the should provide some basic food at lunchtime. If they wish to excel at customer service then they should not allow their staff do as they wish in absentia. If they have a husband with an attitudal problem then he should be hidden away. If they make mistakes then they should apologise.
On checkout I found that uniquely they had taken cash in advance of our arrival. We will be back for a month in May and there are plenty of other places to stay,
