“Great look-inside, nice surrounding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2011

I've been in the workshop, and had a chance to create my own "bonbonier" (candy dish). The cafe is great, you can drink your tea or espresso of the cups made in Herend.
The surrounding is great, with gentle hills and tiny, mainly Swabian villages. Ajka, with the famous crystal factory, is just a few miles from Herend, and Szentgál (just beside Herend) offers great caving opportunity.

“Always worth a visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2009

The Herend mini factory and museum are both worth a visit. Very informative tour, even if your not much interested in porcelain. The amount of effort that goes into the tiniest little detail is just amazing and you get to appreciate the craftmanship and also the prices of Herend porcelain figures and tableware.

Check out the cafe's apricot cake, it's an absolute delight and you obviously eat and drink from Herend tableware.

Go there!

“Worth a Detour from Veszprem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2008

The famous Herend porcelain factory is now the largest porcelain factory in Europe still making hand made and hand painted porcelain.

It is situated a short distance from beautiful Veszprem, and even if you are not much interested in porcelain, the "mini factory tour" is fascinating - and if you have never seen porcelain being made before, a revelation.

The factory tour costs about £5.00. Just turn up. There is a website, but the tours are very regular. If you have to wait then you can while away the time having coffee in the superb restaurant, (free coffee with every tour ticket), or take a look at the splendid Herend museum (access also included).

The tour is about 30 mins long and starts with an absurd, (beautiful Herend employees dressed as Herend cups and saucers, for instance), but rather charming film about the factory, and then you will be conducted round a demonstration of every manufacturing process up to the point at which the items go off to be fired. You cannot see that, of course, though you do get to examine a real kiln.

Our guide spoke beautiful English - there are certainly German tours, not sure which other languages. She was very patient and informative and answered all questions. Also very laid back - there were only three of us on our little tour, she left us at the end to continue talking to and watching the Herend demonstrators, and just said "leave when you want"

I was given the chance to try painting the famous Herend "fishnet" pattern on a bird, and discovered that over-glaze painting is much harder than it looks! And before we left we were all presented with an unpainted, unfired rose, to remind us of our visit - got them back home intact and the children were very impressed.

This visit ot the factory provides a perfectly suitable hour or so for an older child, by the way - any child old eough to appreciate the manufacturing process, which at points is very like clay modelling.

You can, of course, have lunch in the restaurant, with its giant Herend porcelain carnival figures, but it is expensive. After you have finished, follow the directions to the Herend workers' canteen and you will be made very welcome, you can have a perfectly OK basic canteen lunch for a fraction of the price.

The large Herend shop on the premises sells a very wide variety of Herend's admittedly expensive products. You will not find the famous animals much cheaper than at home - Herend is highly prized in Hungary, as it is in Europe generally. But nowhere more than in Hungary itself. However, you will see far more of their range than is usual in gift shops, which tend to restrict themselves to the collectable fishnet animals.

Very well worth a visit - you will not regret it, and combining a visit to the factory with a trip to Veszprem would make a wonderful day out.
