“Comfortable, good breakfast, good location for Old Town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

The hotel is handily placed for access by public transport from the airport (bus, 0.70 Lats) with the stop to the airport directly outside and from the airport diagonally opposite outside the Stockmann building.

Extremely hand for the Old Town - the back door opens into one of the boundary streets of the Old Town. A bit distant from the 'Centre', which is the Art Nouveau district, but the tram system is fine.

I had a room on the top floor, with grand views across the Moscow District, the markets, the river, and Stalin's birthday cake. comfortable, good shower room, and in February toasty warm. Good breakfast with a range to suit most european requirements - bacon for the Brits, raw herring for the Balts, and everything in between.

Check-in time is 3.00, and I was early, but they happily put my bag in the luggage room so I could start to explore straight away.

I booked through an internet discount site and got amazing value for money - the advertised rack-rate at reception I would have found a bit high.

If i were to return at a warmer time of year, I would definitely book here again.

Room Tip: The higher you go, the better the view - and the further from the lobby bar in the atrium that the r...

Stayed at the Avalon hotel with five friends. Prior to our arrival the hotel offered us advice on transfers from the airport, either the bus or they could have someone meet us of the plane. We chose the latter and it cost 14 Lats (one way) for a minibus that sat eight people. Our first impression of the hotel we excellent and they let us check-in early. The rooms are a good size and came with free Internet. The view from our room looked over the central market, which we found out later use to be zeplin hangers during the first world war. The hotel was only a five minute walk from the old town where there are plenty of nice bars and restaurants. We ate in two Latvian restaurants that are near the the House of Blackheads, both excellent. The old city is beautiful, but can be a little disorientating at times. There is a good view of the old town from the top of the Radison Blue hotel.
An excellent hotel and city.

My girlfriend and I spend a get-away-weekend at Avalon Hotel in December and loved it!
The hotel is located very well just outside the old city and next to the market halls.
We got a room on the top floor with a wonderful view of the river and city.
All in all the hotel is a good value for money with nice rooms.
Only complaint is the breakfast which was a minor let-down.

I booked a 3 night stay at a very favourable rate and I definately got value for my money. The hotel is nothing special, but with a comfortable bed, nice breakfast and friendly staff you dont need much more. Will stay there again if I go back to Riga as it was very conviniant located just on the edge of the old town.

The Avalon equals the best hotels at which I have ever stayed. I landed at the airport late at night and could have taken the number 22 bus but noting that all the taxis quoted their fares per kilometre painted on the side I decided to take one. the driver quoted a flat rate of 9 lats which would be somewhere between 10 and 11 English pounds. Although I arrived after the restaurant had closed they made me some soup with bread.
All the staff spoke good English and all were most helpful. The hotel is well placed; you only walk for about ten minutes before you are in the old town. In the opposite direction there is a rail and bus station and a huge market which is worth a visit. I just went for relaxation and not for Christmas markets but nevertheless there was a small but good value market.
My room was excellent in all respects and there was always a good wi-fi signal at no extra cost.
BBC World Service was available on the television. The bar was excellent and prices of drinks were quite reasonable. I look forward to returning in warmer weather.

Room Tip: I chose a room facing the back of the hotel but do not think there would be a problem at the front a...

This hotel is well placed near the Old Town which is easy enough for you to explore on foot. Have a taste of local ambience in the hugh Central Market across the road. There are stores inside and outside with lots of fresh fruits, nuts, cheeses and meat.
We were initially given a room which had a few steps leading to the main sleeping area. Bad idea , if you have lugggage, kid and seniors with you. We requested for a change and was granted - much more comfy and seemed more spacious.
Breadfast spread is reasonable but has the added advantage of cooking fresh omelette with ham/chese/mushroom on request at no extra charge.
Service is reasonable. Cost of meals are also affordable.

Room Tip: Request for a room which does not have steps leading to the sleeping area. The higher floors would b...
