“Fantastic Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2012

We stayed here for 4 nights and enjoyed our stay very much.
SInce arriving early at the hotel, check in wasnt till 3pm, we sat in the hotel bar and had drinks and food. Which was very nice and so very reaonsably priced.
After Check-in a little later, we went up to our room on the 4th floor. It was a lovely spacious room which over looked the street and the central market. The room was spotlessly clean and was cosy.
We had breakfast included in the rate we paid for and we wasnt disappointed as there was so much to choose from.
The hotel is right on the edge of the Old Town, and a less than 5 minute walk will take you right into the main area, with pubs, shops and restaurants. Also good location for the Christmas Markets. About a 20 minute drive from the airport also.
Cannot fault this hotel at all.

Avoid this hotel at all costs!!!!!

I cancelled my booking with the travel agencies concerned, within the booking deadlines. But the hotel still decided to charge my card. I spoke with the Hotel Reservations Manager Anita, and the Hotel General Manager Dimitri on the phone both who refused to refund the charge. Even when the travel agents got involve they still refused to refund the charge.

My opinion of this hotel is that it run by jobs worth's, and should be avoided at all costs!!! There are better hotels in Riga and in the same location who offer a better standard of customer service than the Hotel Avalon!!!! In the I have ten years, I visiting in RigaI have never come across a hotel run by a bunch of jobs worth's. I feel that both the Reservations Manager and The Hotel General Manager both must of attended the Basil Fawlty School Of Hotel Management!!!!!

Avalon has potential. It is well situated just a short walk from the old town, near the central station and has an airport bus almost directly opposite the front door. Inside the architecture is a bit strange (unless you are in a movie from the 1970s) but the rooms are big and comfortable, the staff friendly, the minibar well stocked, dressing gown and slippers awaiting and free internet connection. The downsides are: it can get bit noisy if there is a party on the ground floor because the sound travels up the huge atrium; the hotel faces a busy road, which means no open windows (although the sound proofing is impressive) and the bad news for non-smokers is the mix of smoking/non-smoking rooms. My room was OK but my companions asked to be changed because of the smell. So, beware when booking and you'll be fine. But with the cultural capital coming up in 2014 it might be wise for the management to consider Avalon a smoke free zone, not to mention attracting guests from the USA. This hotel is good value for money and it would have gotten four starts, except for the smoke hazard.

Room Tip: Ask for non-smoking, as far away from the smoking rooms as possible.

On one of our many visits to Riga we opted for the Avalon based on price and the reviews on Trip Advisor..On arrival check in was swift and we received dinner vouchers for the six nights. Our room however reeked of smoke, despite our requesting a non smoking room. Returning to reception from floor 7 the receptionist was apologetic assuring us the room was non smoking. I pointed out that there was an ashtray in the room, the response was all rooms have ashtrays.
Strange it may seem, the receptionist explained th hotel was full, but they would upgrade us free of charge to a junior suite,
The suite was comfortable, the breakfast was sufficient quite a few choices of hot and cold Buffet We tried the evening meal this was adequate and well cooked and if you opt not to eat you get two free drinks so no complaints there.
As we travel regularly to Rga we would certainly stay at the Avalon again, after all it s only a five minute walk to Domini Carnes

We didn't really choose this hotel as it came with a Groupon deal, but I'd definitely recommend it. The location is great - just over the road from the bus station (it costs less than £1 for the 30 min bus journey from the airport on number 22), right opposite the amazing central market and just on the edge of the old town. Pretty much everything is within walking distance.

The reception staff all had good english and were exceptionally helpful, always willing to scribble tips and directions on an endless supply of free maps. The hotel is modern and feels stylish, room was clean, spacious and well fitted out. Although it's on a main road the windows are very soundproof. Breakfast was good with lots of choice (pancakes especially recommended), though the hot plates didn't keep everything very hot.

There was a kettle in the room but coffee and tea bags were chargeable so take your own. Also, there's a glass elevator and no (accessible non-fire escape) stairs, so avoid if you have vertigo!

Room Tip: Most rooms are on the south side overlooking the road and central market. There are are few on the n...

Booked this hotel for me and my friend's trip to Riga for a weekend. It did not disappoint. Location was ideal, very close to old town but far enough away from all the action so our sleep was not disturbed. Rooms were of a good standard and staff were polite and helpful in the traditional serious Baltic way! The only criticism was the food. We tried an evening meal in the restuarant one night and although the price was inexpensive, the food itself was bland and portions very small. Lesson learned was to find a decent local restaurant for the other nights. Cleanliness was exceptional as it was in every establishment in the whole city. Puts the UK to shame! Would recommend this accommodation to other travellers. Suitable for both adult parties and families.

My first trip to Latvia, so I had no idea what to expect.
I was surprised when I checked in that my room rate included a free evening meal. Later that evening, you do discover that the menu is VERY limited. Ask for the special menu, not the full menu which I initially had, thinking I was in for a right treat!
But as the hotel is such a good location, you would be a fool to spend every evening in that restaurant anyway. Riga is an amazing city to just wonder around in, so make the most of it.

The room was quite large, overlooking the road and canal. Noise wasn't an issue for me, so I had a comfortable nights sleep every night.

The reception staff all spoke very good English, and were very polite and helpful....even for things like asking for directions etc.
