“Very good Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2010

The actual name of the hotel is not "viesturs" but "royal old city hotel" We stay there 4 days in christmas time, very nice and clean rooms, good staff and exellent breackfast. The position is very central, good to see all "old Riga". The price is good for the level of the accomodation.... try this hotel!!!!!

I was in this hotel for nearly a week before we decided to move to another one. I chose the hotel based on the feedback of other travelers but I was completely deceived by it. The rooms are very dark, there is almost no light and they are depressing. On top of it you can hear the noise of the waterclose of other rooms. We moved to another hotel which cost like 20 Euro more per night for two people and we were so happy with the change. Riga is a beatiful city full of design places but this hotel does not match the city standarts. On top of it the recepcionist were cold and arrogant, we had to print a boarding card for our trip back and they sent us to a cybercoffee place!!! The only good thing of the hotel is the location. Internet connection wasnt really working in the rooms.

Excellent, spacious and clean accommodation and good breakfast buffet. Well located in Old Town and on a quiet site street although difficult to find (ensure you have a good map). Friendly staff. Highly recommended.

The hotel has a great location. Only 10 meter to one of the main road, Valnu street and 200 meter to Livu laukums square. The taxi from the airport takes 15 minutes and costs 8 euros to Teatra iela, which lies 20 meter of the hotel. From the hotel you can order a transfer to the airport and it costs 10 euros from door to door. The room is big enough and nice decorated. Very quiet becouse of situation on the backstreet. Only 13 rooms. Good value of money, 65 eur per night including good breakfast. The minibar had a reasonable prices; water 1 LVL, cola 1,20 LVL, big beer 1,50 LVL, wines end spirits 3 LVL. There are a big supermarket and shopping mall within 100 meter on Valnu street.

I recently stayed 2 nights at Hotel Viesturs with a friend. The hotel is located in a quiet street within old town. All the major tourist attractions are within short walking distance. The main bus/train station is less than 10 minutes away. A big supermarket and some good restaurants are just around the corner. The hotel is easily reached by a public bus (no 22, only 0.50 LAT) from Riga Aiport. The bus runs every 20 minutes or so and the journey takes about 20 minute. Check out the direction on the hotel website.http://www.hotelviesturs.lv/

Our twin room on the 3rd floor was clean and adequate. Noise from people on the level 4 walking around was disturbing . Mini fridge also ran very loudly.

Beds were comfortable (yes, some people may find them a bit too hard). Bathroom with a bath tub was clean and adequately spaced. Liked the heated towel rail.

All the staff we came across were very friendly, helpful and fluent in English.

Breakfast room was cute. Breakfast included in the rate was average. Usual cold meat, bread, pastries (tasted strange), yogurt, fresh fruit, sausages, & scrambled eggs (cold), cold/hot drinks were on offer buffet style. A kitchen staff also makes pancake, omlette, fried egg and porridge if on order.

Overall, this hotel offers a great location, comfortable room and friendly staff.

The location of the hotel is just excellent. Most of the sights in Riga are located within a small geographical area, so you will have everything you need within walking distance if you stay at Hotel Viesturs. Notice that you can get cheaper accommodation outside the city center, but it is certainly a welcome luxury to be able to walk back to the hotel room any time during the day for a break.

The hotel was very nice. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the room was clean and cozy. On the downside, the internet was very unstable, so we had to use a nearby internet café. The breakfast menu was not very large, but quite decent. However, the food was prepared in a kitchen with low capacity while we were eating, so if you showed up early for breakfast you had little to choose between.

That aside, the only really big problem with the hotel was the bed. The bed was so hard that we had to sleep on the duvet to get through the nights. And not the firm expensive kind of bed. It was more like lying on a cheap foam rubber mattress on the floor. Our backs could not have taken more than 3 nights. We asked if we could get another room, but we were told that all the beds were the same.

If the bed had been better I would gladly have recommended Hotel Viesturs, but if you don't enjoy sleeping on concrete I suggest you find another hotel.

We had a wonderful stay in Hotel Viesturs, which is located on a quiet side street in the middle of Old Town, just 2 mins from Galerija Centrs shopping centre.

It was literally a couple of minutes´ walk to all sight seeing places in Old Town! The BEST location!

Before we went, I got prompt and courteous replies via email to all my questions.

On arrival, check-in was fast and problem-free. Our room had firm twin beds, which were very good for our backs. The room also had 2 radiators which I could turn on cold for night time, as I prefer. (In many 4 star hotels in Finland and Sweden, the room temperature is controlled centrally, which means I usually sleep uncomfortably in a too hot room.)

The breakfast room surprised me, as it was like arriving in someone´s home. Only 6 tables! It felt really home-y. Continental breakfast plus was on offer buffet-style, and a charming, shy older lady made pancakes (to die for!), omelettes etc on order. No extra charge!

The room was clean, towels were changed daily, bed clothes every 3 days.

The basin in the bath room was beautiful!! The toilet was slow to flush, but worked. There was adequate hot water every day I took a shower. The only thing I missed was a bidet shower, but not all hotels have those.

I really felt like home there. It was quiet and wonderful. I did not want to be in loud surroundings so this quiet little hotel suited me perfectly.

Our view was to the back yard, which was not the best thing of course. Occasionally, people went to have a cigarette in the yard.

There was a safety box available at the reception at 2 L per day, and I recommend it. I felt better having our passports and flight tickets there.

But, I feel happy about the stay, it was great value, and I would most certainly stay in Hotel viesturs again if I went to Riga!
