“Great hotel, great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2009

This small, 13-room, hotel has a great location - 2 minutes walk from the National Opera and no more than 5 minutes from any of the top 10 sights in Riga's Old Town. Plus, it is on a really quiet side-street with no passing traffic.
Well appointed rooms - each decorated in a unique style - gets you miles away from the Radisson/Best Western carbon-copy feel of time away. Very comfortable beds, great bathrooms and always very warm (it was between minus 4 and minus 12 outside while we were in Riga).
Plenty to eat at breakfast and a very helpful waitress eager to make pancakes, omlettes, etc besides the varied array of meats, cheeses, fruits, cereals and pastries.
Reasonable rates - we paid 51 LATs for a double room including breakfast and all taxes - however, VAT is to rise soon in Latvia and this will affect all prices for tourists.
If we returned to the city, we'd certainly book again at the Viesturs.

This small hotel is charming and the location is great. One of my favorites regarding the location was that the National Opera was a 3 minute walk and I got to see two operas and one ballet for 24 lats. It is great for being situated in the old city at a pedestrian only street filled with many street vendors, shops, restuarants, and the Galleria mall; as well as within walking distance to the new city and art nouveau district. The decor is warm and cozy, the bathrooms are great, and the buffet - well you can't go wrong when you can also get pancakes and eggs made especially for you and coffee brought to your table!

We are two mature ladies who never stay in the large chain hotels. We always look for something small, comfortable and central. The location could not have been better (it took no more than 5 minutes to get the airport bus from opposite the central market) and we found nothing at all to complain about. The staff were very cheerful and helpful offering advice on eating places when it was asked for.
It is only a very small hotel so the breakfast buffet is a little limited but everything that is offered is fresh and plentiful.

The hotel is small, quite, stylish, relatively cheep, clean and good quality. Excellent loaction in the old town. I stayed there for business and in 2 weeks I will be there with my wife as well. The rooms are good for a romatic stay in the old town of Riga.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2008

Went to Riga with my two kids. Booked the suite in Viesturs 4 months ago - still they managed to mess up the reservation og mailed me that I had to interupt the 6-nights stay with the second night in another room. Anyway, they managed to fix the suite at last.
The hotel is an small, old and rather "cosy" hotel in the middle of old town. I say "cosy" because it's far to mutch "bling" all over: Laces, old pots&pans, chandeleers every way you look. The suite is ideal for a small family, and the roofterrace is very nice. The locaton is great for seeing Rigas old town. And if you bother to ask they make you great pancaces for brekfast. But you have to ask - they don't offer you...
The room looked clean at first sight, but there was an horrible smell! We searcht for a long time for the source of the smell (a dead rat??) And finally we found at pair of old smelly socks under the sofa! The receptionist reaction to this was rather representative for the behavior of as well the staff and many latvians: Rude and arrogant. The receptionist never bothered to look up to say hello to us - not once during our 6-nights stay! The only time they talked to the guests was when they had some kind of complains, ex to turn of the sauna-light, shut down the umbrella at the terrace etc. They charge extra for absolutely everything (ex extra pillow) and even tried to charge us moore than the price they had confirm by e-mail when we booked. Thank god i brought the e-mails..
All in all we had a nice time at the Viesturs, but the attitude from both the staff and many people in Riga ("Mummy, why do they never smile?" my ten year old son asked me...) does'nt make us want to go back.

  • Liked — Location in old town and easy getaway to beach and forest
  • Disliked — The price (overpriced) and rude staff

This little hotel is a gem in Riga where there are lots and lots of noisy areas and bachelor/hen nights etc. It is off the main street and in a quiet area yet very convenient to everything. I went with a friend and we booked a room to share with two twin beds. The rooms are smallish, but why do you need a huge room when you are there to see the sights?! We found everything lovely, especially the amazing breakfast with made-to-order pancakes etc included!
