“Rain Retreat”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2014

Stumbling across the back entrance of this mysterious place I was pleasantly surprised when creeping into the ill lit theatre like rooms. A grand, ornate, intriguing interior stocked to the gills with balsams and chocolate. Wet and cold I opted for the hot chocolate, quite expensive since you have to make it yourself but novel (I won't ruin the surprise). We supped beverages by candlelight then browsed the chocolates. Trying to determine the price proved taxing, then frustrating then terrifying. The rather churlish yet traditionally clothed lady gave up on a sale and we left glad to have experienced this black magic but content never to return.

Enjoyed the fabulous chocolate drink in the even more fabulous surroundings! A very ornate example of a traditional latvian style cafe with a splendid array of chocolate treats to sample. It is expensive...but quite unique so may be worth a splurge. Service could of been warmer but the temperature of the cocoa was just right! ... If you love bitter chocolate go for the dark lustre of the hot chocolate instead of cocoa, but if your tooth is sweeter stick with cocoa...the equivalent of hot choc in the uk.

“good balsam cocktails and cake”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2014

I was here in February and enjoyed it a lot. The drinks (a warm coffee liqueur balzam and another hot balzam drink) were subtle, not too sweet and had the definite character of balsam. We also had a slice of cake that was really yummy and flavorful. Tasted better than it looked.

The staff where period costumes which seems a bit over the top and had me worried we were in for a tourist trap, but it was really yummy and a good break from the cold outside. The building is pretty cool too, the bar is made of old pharmacy drawers and has a creepy gothic feel to it.

“Definately try it...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2013

We were in Riga mid Sept 2013, and got taken to the Black Magic Bar on a walking tour of the Old City. It was only for a look and a bit of a story, but cause it looked so good my fiancee and I went back there later that day for a better look. We had some chocolates and hot chocolate, both with the famous Black Balsam alcohol. This has a strong taste but quite nice... Both the chocolates and hot chocolate were divine...
When we went the bar was fairly quite with patrons. There is two rooms - one small by the bar and a larger one towards the rear of the place. In summer months they also set up a decking out the front with tables and chairs. The front room has small tables with fabric covered single lounge chairs that are very comfy and makes you just want to stay there and chat. The back room has larger tables and chairs like in a dining room, for groups, etc.
The interior has an old style rustic feel, and seeing the balsam was originally developed as a medicine, a sense of a chemist. There is a lot of timber throughout giving it that comfortable feel. At the bar there is a glass section full of different chocolates that make your mouth water, and they all look so fresh and wanting you to buy them.
The staff didn't seem to speak much english but that didn't hinder ordering off the menu. It is not a restaurant, so it is mainly hot & cold drinks, cake, biscuits and chocolates. You can also buy bottles of the black balsam to take away, ranging from little to large.
The staff are dressed in traditional clothing that adds to the atmosphere.

Definately have a hot chocolate with black balsam... Treat yourself...
