“Moving”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2013

This is the essence of what has left from the large Jewish population in Riga. The place is located on the peaceful square, easily to be reached with the tram (traveling along Moskavas iela), the neighborhood was in war tome converted into ghetto. The majority of the Jews were killed in Sumbuli and in camp in Salaspils. That is a quiet, just commemoration of people that are no longer there....

“Sad history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2013

The killing of Jews occurred not only in the death camps, but also on the streets of cities, towns, and little villages all over the Baltics. More recognition and monuments to Jews and others who were killed by the Nazis have appeared after the Russians left in 1991.

Another memorial worth seeing is the Salaspils Memorial Ensemble near Riga.

“Very moving”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

This ruin of the Riga synagogue sits in a peaceful little park, with a granite boulder with the date of its destruction by the Nazis in 1941. There's also a modern monument to those who helped save some people from becoming victims of the Nazis.

“Moving ruins of a destroyed synagogue”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2012

This was Riga's largest synagogue, built 1868-1871. It was the site of a horrible crime during the Nazi occupation. On July 4, 1941, hundreds of Jewish refugees from Lithuania and local Latvian Jewish residents were forced into the basement, which was then intentionally burned. Only the ruins remain today.

It takes about 15 minutes to walk here from the train station. It is easy to find: just stay on Gogola iela (street).
