Owner description: One of the most magnificent buildings in Town Hall Square is the House of Blackheads (circa 1334 and rebuilt in 1995-99), which once hosted a brotherhood of foreign merchants and now serves as both a museum and concert hall.

“A Beautiful Building”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2014

A lovely, ornate building that was recently re-built after being destroyed in World War 2 and neglected by the Soviets. The building gives you an idea of what Riga must have been like 500 years ago.

“Impressive facade shows the wealth of past merchants”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2014

We examined the House of Blackheads from the Ratshaus Square, the main square. The square is easy to find, especially if you approach it from Kalku Street which leads to this square from the Freedom Tower. We saw this guildhouse only in daylight hours, but even so it was impressive, mainly, because of its height and width for a building of that time period and its stepped roofline so typical of Lowland countries' architecture. Our guidebook said the place was closed due to it being used as a temporary residence for a leading political figure while the Riga Castle, his official residence, was undergoing a reno. Impressive facade which adds to the main square's old town feel, but closed, so good only as photostop.

“Heart of the city”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2014

The square where the house is located is the heart of the city. Building itself was reconstructed from nothing in accordance with old drawings and pictures! This is exceptional piece of history brought back to life!
