I stayed here for 3 nights and was more than happy with my stay. Other than the fact my booking agent failed to pay the hotel in advance caused issues, the hotel had done nothing wrong but it slighly soured the experience.
I had a Superior Room or Reval Class room. Each website calls it different. It is better than the standard room because my friends had standard rooms. Better bed, mattress, plasmas, safe, good air con yet the room was smaller. There are two parts to the hotel. One is the main buildings which is the 27storey building and the north wing has 6 floors which house the newer rooms and the executive suites. On the 1st two nights I had a superior room in the main building on the 24th floor. Well appointed room and a great view to boot. Smaller rooms than the new wing where I was on the last night.( I checked out for one night to stay in another city ).
Main building bathroom had bath with shower, new wing had a wet room which was very annoying because the water was never retained in the shower even though there was a step, I must have had a slanty room.
Breakfast is great. It really is! Hot buffet, cold buffet, cereals, lots of breads. There is choice for any visitor to the hotel. Also, even though the hotel is massive and the reception always seemed crammed with coach tours, breakfast is efficient and always tables to be found.
The skyline bar on the 26th floor is amazing any time of the day. During the day its very relaxed with drinks overlooking the views. By night its jammed with people from all over the city, other hotels and guests from within. Its a bar / cocktail bar and mostly the staff are making cocktails which makes for a long wait at the bar.
The hotel has a large lobby bar serving reasonably priced food. It has a casino which I dont believe is frequented by many people at all. The nightclub was closed down for renovation.
The hotel is very popular with coach groups, business travellers and everybody in between. Its also popular for stag parties which you cant miss. However, they tend to use the skyline bar as a starting point to wet the senses and head into Old Town. Also there are two lifts that can get to the 26th(bar) and 27th floor(gym). After 11pm they will not stop at any floor other than the 26th and 1st so no unsavoury carachters stopping at floors of guest rooms. Even if they did, the access hallways on every floor have keycards so they cannot get in even if they wanted to.
There are 3 separate lifts for bedrooms floor going up as high as 25 only.
Location is good, there are better but they are either dingy or too expensive. From the door of the hotel, walk around 10 minutes to old town which is no problem, your on holidays, whats the rush?
Outside the hotel there are a line of red taxis. Use these guys ONLY! At night there are queues of white taxis waiting for people to come out of the Club Essential and Jockey Club(gentemans club) about 5 minutes from the hotel. They ask you "taxi?" and if you say "no" , realising you speak English as you if you would like to be brought to "sexy ladies" for ......................................... you can imagine the rest.
Info, there is a shuttle bus from the Airport in which is 3 LAT each and a taxi costs 10 LAT for four people and leaves when you want. So if you can fit 3 or 4 in a taxi its better and faster. Taxi drivers are crazy drivers and so is the shuttle bus driver.
Free WIFI, Umbrella loan facility, bag drop after check out, business centres, 3 bars, 3 restaurants amongst other bits and pieces.
I loved Riga, I loved the hotel. I will definately go back.
