“Delicious food, cheap prices”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2012

This place is really nice restaurant with good atmosphere, delicious food and cheap prices. Live music in the evenings and lots of local people. Just be sure to pay the exact amount, because the waiter does not want to give your change back :(

“Wonderful food, real beer, great ambiance”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2012

There is a truly wonderful collection of local beers, and coming from the UK and Belgium we greatly appreciate a good beer. Not only that the food was genuinely good. Excellent value, plentiful and delicious. Finally friendly and attentive staff. Throw in the live local, traditional folk music which was enjoyed and danced to by the local youth, and it was a great evening.

Perhaps i should also mention that we are in our 50s, were twice as old as almost everyone else there, but we weren't made to feel in the least out of place.

“Worth Finding- Wonderful Waitstaff, Great Food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2012

We were delighted to have this this cozy and comfortable restaurant recommended to us by the locals (Ala means "Cave" in Latvian). There is a large variety of beer, and the waitstaff was very helpful making recommendations. The food is wonderful and very reasonable. The chef works hard, and the presentation of the food is lovely. Potato Pancakes were the the best we had on our entire trip. We also had the pork chops, and the Catch of the Day was delicious. Ala is definitely worth looking for!

“An enjoyable experience of latvian beer, food, music & dance”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2012

The club is in a cellar/basement in the Old Town. The staff are friendly, very helpful & some speak english. Order your drink & food at the bar & sit where you can! The place is busy, full of a young incredibly well-behaved latvian crowd letting their hair down. The beer & food are incredibly cheap, & surprisingly well-presented & tasty. Expect to wait up to an hour for your meal at dinner. Sit back, enjoy your beer & fried garlic bread, listen to traditional folk music, & watch as young ordinary latvians throw themselves in to their folk dance with a quiet pride & rhythm. The sorrel soup, & chicken liver with vegetables is tasty & filling. The menu has a decent selection of rustic hearty fare. All in all, an enjoyable experience of Latvia.

“The food was very good, the waiters were even better!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2012

Me and my girlfriend was in Riga and I had booked a table by mail in advance. Since both of us have had Gastric bypass surgery we were a bit worried that we wouldn't be recieved with much joy since they could have had couples that ate (and paid) alot more, this is a problem for us at every restaurant.

I was very wrong, the guy who waitered on us was very friendly and understanding, he was good in speaking english and thats not too common in Riga and on top of that he had a good sense of humor.

We ate two entreés, the Mushroom and local goats cheese filo pastry tartlet was really a taste explosion and something I can recommend - even my girlfriend who dosnt like goatcheese thought it was good. The Local apple-blossom honey and oregano marinated chicken drumsticks French cut and oven baked, served with sautéed spiced vegetable caviar
and rye bread croutons was also really good, tender chicken and the croutons were to die for.

We shared a main course, Traditional grey peas , served in a hollowed out loaf of bread with the traditional pan fried smoked bacon and onion cream sauce and fresh vegetable salad, and it was a portion we couldn't finish - the taste was something I will dream of tho - sooo good.

The place itself was really cozy and we enjoyed it very much, so much so we came there the next day and had beer, wine and the beer platter with garlic bread, local cheese and smoked meat. The garlic bread was rye bread in thick sticks that was easily the best garlic bread I've ever had. Also, we had a diffrent waiter this time, a girl although a bit all over the place when it comes to memory she was really great in every other aspect. All in all we can recommend this place to almost anyone.
