Stayed here for 3 nights as part of a 2 centre holiday with Baltic Holidays.
We arrived at 11.30am, which was the time arranged by the holiday company through our private transfer, so we thought great, most of the day ahead, however we were informed by reception that we couldn't check into our room till 3.00pm. Anyway we had a coffee, and wandered down to the main street having a look at the shops etc. We did manage to check in at 2.45 in the end.
We were booked into the Amber Section which is sea view, the room was large, it had a mini-bar,safe and hairdryer. The decor was a bit 1980's though in dark green with pale pink walls and stripey curtains. We had asked for a twin room but it was made up as a double. We contacted reception who promised to send someone but they didn't arrive and we sorted it out ourselves.
We had a balcony with two chairs but the sea-view was disappointing to say the least, one of those where you need to lean over the balcony to catch a glimpse. The room was also facing North and didn't get any sun so in all the time we were there (July) it was never warm enough to use it. The balconies on the other side of the hotel did get sun and also a good view so we were unlucky to be almost as far back as you could get on the north side. We did however have a very good view of the flat roof over the pool right beneath us.
Having unpacked we went downstairs to see what was on offer, and it soon became apparant that there was absolutely nowhere to sit in the hotel with a view of any kind, unless you were using the restaurant. Considering that the hotel is right on the beach that seemed strange! In fact there was really no relaxing area at all, other that the small coffee shop.
There was of course the swimming pool and the spa which offered a huge range of treatments including enemas and IV injections. They were all quite pricey though, and we can't speak for quality as we didn't try any. The pool also had to be paid for though I think it was free for guests until 11.00am after which you had to pay for 90mins use. We decided this was a tad cheeky and didn't use this either. Basically there were no complimentary facilities at all - not even a comfy chair to sit on, just a long list of facilities which had to be paid for.
The beach was literally a few minutes away down some steps, there were beach towels for hire and some sunloungers(also had to be paid for). You had to collect them at the top of the steps and then carry them to wherever you wanted to go on the beach. They had no mattress and were quite decrepit, but the worse thing was that they weighed a ton, I'm no weakling but struggled to carry one even a short distance! After a couple of hours on one, even with a towel I had bright red pressure marks on my back - and I'm of average weight.
We found the breakfast to be fine in general, the porridge was lovely, there was a good selection of fruit, also cheese, cold meat and cooked breakfast which I was not too keen on, however there was some nice bread and pastries. The breakfast room could get very busy at the weekend and you had to share tables.
The clientel were rather bizarre to our eyes, lots of people dressed to the nine's with flashy clothes and jewellery, lots of expensive cars outside, elderly ladies with lap-dogs which I believe are allowed in the rooms, in fact there were tell-tale doggy-pee marks on the balcony side.
The staff at reception seemed to be struggling to cope and there weren't enough of them, none of the staff seemed very happy and I don't think anybody smiled at us once, there was just a very bizarre atmosphere - it felt a bit more like a clinic than a hotel.
We ate out each night - there are some lovely places to eat in Jurmala, Overall we enjoyed our visit but wouldn't stay at this hotel again.
