“Good location and nice atmosphere”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013

Stayed here for 3 nights.

Good:
- Nice atmosphere and cool design. Fun to walk around in the corridors and get lost in the maze
- Right in the middle of the old town, probably the best location you can get
- Helpful staff
- Free WiFi
- Comfortable shower

Could be better
- Breakfast was pretty average, nothing to be excited over. They have what you need and not much else. Cereals, bread, buns, cold cuts, cheese, coffee, some hot food, sweet pastries and juice.

Bad:
- Thin walls, very easy to hear the neighbor, even in the bathroom
- Small windows and no A/C or any other kind of ventilation system. We were here in the beginning of april and thought the rooms were hot, I don't want to experience these rooms in june - august. The problem are the windows, especially in our room (332), which is located on the floor and as big as an A3 sheet of paper. It didn't feel like the outside air replaced the old one inside, so we found it uncomfortable to stay in the rooms for a long time. The rooms have a fan, but this is not good enough in 2013, in my opinion. I hope for the sake of others that the other rooms are better ventilated.
- Street on the outside was noisy, but there's not much one can do about it other than bring earplugs and/or sleeping medicine. Didn't bother me that much, but kept others in my family awake, who stayed near street level.

The rooms and bathrooms were clean, the hotel itself also seemed clean and tidy.

All in all, the hotel has some drawbacks that probably would make me consider another hotel the next time I visit Tallinn, but if you are here for a short time, maybe 1-2 nights, and spend most of your time outside the hotel room, then this hotel could be a good choice.

Can't comment on the price as I didn't pay for the rooms.

Room Tip: If you can, try to avoid rooms 330 - 333.

Don't expect a warm welcome - or even a polite one - at this hotel.
The staff are sullen, bordering on the rude. Any greetings, requests or inqiries are ignored, be they in Estonian, Russian or English! My comment to reception about a very unpleasant smell outside our room was greeted with a shrug and 'it's a very old building'.
The economy double room was spacious, clean and warm and the bed was comfortable.
The shower was powerful and there was plenty of hot water but take care in the shower as the floor is tiled and it can be very slippery.
The building is interesting and quirky (appallingly bad paintings on the walls but you won't find much good art in Tallinn anyway).
Be aware that there is no lift and a lot of narrow steep stairs to negotiate. We had to step over two wooden beams and limbo under a chest high beam to reach
our room - a real test of agility with the suitcases on our arrival and departure!
The breakfast was well presented and plentiful but of poor quality - not 4star hotel standard.
Our two week stay was quiet in the main but the hotel fills up to capacity at the weekends so call and remind them of your booking if you are to arrive at this time of the week.
The location is good and there is a small 24 hour shop in the next street.
Arrange your own taxis if you want to avoid a silly fare - you shouldn't have to pay more than 10-12 euros to the airport. Reception staff are unable/unwilling to provide local information so don't forget a guide book if you're going for the first time.

Room Tip: Ask for a 3rd floor room over looking the court yard at the back of the hotel if you want a quiet ti...

The walls were so thin we could almost hear the next-door neighbour breathing, and the hotel disco kept us awake till the morning hours, although our room wasn't even close to it. The rooms and the corridors looked a bit cheap. The breakfast was good and the location is even better, but still I will avoid this hotel when visiting Tallinn next time.

The hotel staff were great and the rooms out in the courtyard were comfortable . The breakfast was traditional Baltic and was well presented. The hotel is centrally placed to explore Tallin on foot
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hotel as good value for money and the location is perfect

I've been in Tallinn for several times, this was my first time At St Olav Hotel. I chose it because i needed a hotel right in the central of Old town and that wasn't expensive. What I got was a great value of money! Staff didn't really speak English to us but we managed OK. Rooms were clean, romantic and they had captured well the old atmosphere.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

This hotel offers a return to tha past. Well located 5 minutes walk from the old town.
has a lovely breakfast room with very nice paintings. The breakfast was good enough to star a New day. It has a good number of stairs and this is good to keep yourself in good shape.

This hotel is right in the heart of the old city of Tallinn, ideal for getting out and about in the centre. It is a maze of creaking corridors, but there are plenty of signs letting you know where Reception and the Restaurant are, so it is difficult to get lost. The St Olav could be so much better than it is now: the staff on Reception are not friendly or chatty, the rooms are dark and the breakfast is awful (no yogourt, no muesli, no fruit or fresh juice and no one around to ask for anything). My shower was ok, but the water temperature was not always reliable, and the quirky bathroom meant I had to bend down to see myself in the mirror to shave. On the positive side, it is not at all expensive, its location is superb and the rooms are large. A smiling welcome and goodbye would make the whole place a much better one to stay in.
