“Great hotel, great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013

We stayed here for 3 nights in August. Everything was so nice !

Although the room was small, it was very comfortable. The black out curtains and the individual air conditioning controls let you sleep as late as you want - but I set the alarm, so as not to miss the included breakfast buffet, which is served until 10, and included in the room rate. There is a flat screen TV on the wall, with plenty of channels.

The staff was friendly and helpful, and all spoke English well. There is a pharmacy and a supermarket across the street from the hotel. The supermarket is well stocked, and open until 11 every night.

You can walk to the Old Town in 5 minutes. The tram and bus are a block away. An earlier reviewer complained about a Thai massage joint, a block away - conveniently tocated upstairs from a Thai restaurant. Hey, this is Tallinn, not Disneyworld !

We had a very early flight on our day of departure - we had to leave at 4:30 AM. The staff packed us breakfast sandwiches. We cannot wait to return. Tallinn - and the Hotel Bern - are amazing !

Room Tip: All rooms seem to look out on a courtyard, and are quiet.

3 nights in May.
Great location, periphery of old town.

Twin beds, room small but likely looks larger if a single bed.
Faced the back....quiet. Pub in courtyard may make some rooms noisy. Weird curtains did not fully block out light no matter which way you pulled them....just too short! Always have those earplugs and eyemasks handy!
Yes water gets everywhere....be careful and use the squeegee/ mop!

Clean but could have used a bit of vacuuming attention to carpet edges.
Old fashioned "bedspreads" I hate. Hello! it's the 21 st century and everyone is doing duvets that have covers that are washed between guests. There is a fiberfill duvet as well.

Busy breakfast with good selection but the L shaped set up meant a constant traffic jam of half asleep tourist at the coffee....needs to be laid out differently. The staff, however, is plentiful and busy clearing dishes and tables.

GREAT front desk staff. Helped with boarding passes when "library" computer didn't work right, lent a rechargeable transit card so we could use day pass and gave explicit directions to sights. They were all wonderful especially the delightful Peruvian (!) girl. Gracias !

I stayed for two nights, the location was perfect, the staff were all well mannered spoke good English and were happy to help or answer questions, the room was clean quiet with A/C, wifi enabled and in good order, there was a small court-yard near the entrance, everything you could want and need from a budget hotel.

Room Tip: The shower in my room took about 5 mins for the hot water to come through, other than that all good...

We checked in late, but they were obviously expecting us--Kirsten was friendly and welcoming, giving us a quiet room in back, "away from the beer garden", so we would not be disturbed. We stayed two nights, and every one we met was helpful and knowledgeable, all spoke perfect English. Our room was clean, well furnished, nice bathroom, great breakfast buffet. The hotel is close to Old Town, and staff gave excellent directions on trams/buses to further sights. There is a nice "supermarket" across the street, with many restaurants and shops close by.

I wish we had more time to spend in Tallinn; if we come back, we will definitely stay at the Bern!

Room Tip: A room away from the beer garden would be a good choice, although it did not seem all that rowdy whe...

Stayed for 3 nights at this nice little hotel. the location is perfect, only a minute from the old town and not far from the main shopping areas as well. Room was ok, no view to speak of, the only problem we had was the idiotic shower that flooded the bathroom every time. they supply a mop thing to clean up but why not just put in a shower screen instead, it was pretty stupid. The front desk staff were fantastic, very friendly and helpful with any questions we had of the town, also lending umbrellas without being asked when we had a bit rain about, great service. Very good breakfast as well.

For the low cost, this was a very good 3* hotel. Super-friendly and helpful staff and a location 5 minutes on foot from the old town made this a great place for a short visit. Buffet breakfast included, comfortable bed in a clean room with modern bathroom. Would recommend for business or vacation.

First time in Tallinn and this hotel seemed to fit the bill in terms of location and reviews read. Situated just a stones throw from the old town, behind the city wall, relatively speaking it's in a quiet location. Entrance is via a courtyard, with the excellent Beer House and Red Emperors hostel situated to the right hand side (more about that later). A supermarket open until 23h00 is almost facing the hotel to pick up the essentials and to avoid the mini-bar prices.

Check-in experience was excellent, with very friendly smiling staff, so it was a nice welcome. The hotel only has three floors for rooms (the basement is the breakfast room) and 50 rooms. We were in room 210, with the window overlooking the courtyard. Rooms are of a good size, nicely decorated and kept spotlessly clean. The beds were fine, two singles, maybe a bit narrow for a four star hotel, but they served their purpose. The bathroom was again a Scandinavian inspired design, a wet room (so there is no separate shower base, so when the shower works most of the bathroom floor is wet). I'm not overly keen on the wet room concept but there was a squeegee mop to hand to deal with the water afterwards which helps. However like the room, it was totally clean.

There were a few small gripes with the room, that would make it even better. Install a few coat hooks on the side of the wardrobe or the wall and put a safe inside the room, for a four star, this should be standard procedure.

The location of the room overlooking the courtyard was an issue at night time, since we stayed Friday - Monday (3 nights) and naturally there was noise from the people at the hostel smoking and generally having a good time being weekend. Now I'm not one for believing people have to be silent, but singing "Englishman in New York" at 4am on a Saturday night/Sunday morning was not appreciated :) Admittedly, the window was open and as my friend said the next morning, two ear plugs and there is no issue. I did close the window during the 'Sting' night and the noise did lessen considerably and I could sleep again fine.

Breakfast was good, taken in the basement, with ample tables available considering the hotel is just 50 rooms. Some hot food (scrambled eggs, porridge, meatballs) with the usual cold options.

Service in the hotel was very good, my best example was one night I felt my single pillow was not sufficient, I did not want to get changed to go to the reception or call them for an extra, I decided to improvise with the top sheet of the bed and make an extra pillow to put under the pillow (you can tell I'm an engineer?) Anyway, the next day after the room was made, there were two pillows on my bed. It's not that common for cleaning staff to work this out and to do this. It sounds minor, but to me it shows the attention to detail and that counts. In addition, the reception gave both of us a free voucher for a football game being played on Saturday (we did not go the match in the end) but that was also a nice touch.

If I could I would rate the hotel 3.5 stars, so I round up to 4 stars. To give it 3 stars would be a dis-service, mainly due to the attentive and friendly staff. The best thing is that if you stay here, make sure your room is not facing the courtyard and you will get better sleep (there is not much of a view from that side, but who cares?) On the second floor, the rooms not facing the courtyard start at 212 onwards.

Recommended for Tallinn, I will be back to the city, I loved my time there and there is so much more than just the old town. I would consider to return to the Hotel Bern in the future.

Room Tip: Take a room not facing the courtyard, for example, on the 2nd floor these rooms are numbered 212 and...
