We stayed at the the Swissotel in Tallin just a few weeks after it's opening, so we hadn't seen any photos of the rooms or the spa, just the architect's drawings. The pick-up car at the airport turned out to be nothing but a humble Toyota driven by a suede-clad moustachioed Estonian. In other words: we didn't know what to expect.
With that in mind - and with being not quite used to staying at 5-star hotels - we were subsequently rather overwhelmed by the luxurious lobby and the smiling, helpful staff, as well as - a bit later - our room, the spa and the in-house restaurant Café Swiss.
Our 4 day stay lived up to all our expectations. The room was quite large for a standard double, the bed was certainly king size, and the bathroom almost big enough to swing a cat (if the cat didn't mind a few nasty cracks about the head, to quote Douglas Adams).
Having received our welcome fruit and slipped into something more comfortable, we took the elevator down to the Amrita Spa. With both gym, pool, sauna, steam room and treatment facilities fitted in understated luxury it was a joy to spend several hours over the following days working out, swimming, enjoying the view from the sauna (8th floor!) and getting massages from the very competent staff.
Almost the only thing that didn't quite live up to the 5 star rating was a problem with the heating and a/c - dispite running the a/c at full blast the temperature seldom crawled under 24C, and nobody seemed to be able to fix it. But hey, it was a spa hotel so we were lounging about in our robes most of the time anyway...
And if you were looking for things to critizise, maybe you'd point out that the evening buffet at Café Swiss - however well stocked and varied - wasn't quite international 5 star cuisine standard.
Not that the food wasn't good, it was perhaps just a tad too inspired by the...not overly imaginative Estonian cooking (we didn't know you could actually kill a broccoli?!).
But, to sum things up, though we did perhaps see everything at it's best (what with the hotel being new and shiny and all), we wouldn't hesitate to suggest you choose the Swissotel in Tallin if you're in the market for a luxury spa mini-break in a charming Eastern European city.
