“modern on the BEST location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2013 via mobile

Probably it is best solution for those 4ravelers, who wish save time on transpo4tation and sightseeing in Tallinn. Viru is lockated almost near the entrance to the old town(main tourist attraction) and on the crossroads of city's transportation lines. You can not imagine that this newly renowated and well equiped property is over 40 y.o. it looks like it was build few yearsago. We staid in Viry 5 nights, breakfast was valuable and taste every day, but no any changes day by day. So on the third day we wanted to eat somthing new...The best rooms, I recommend - higher floor on north side(to have better spectacular view on the old town and harbour).

This was the first time we stayed at hotel Viru at our own cost - last time, several years ago hotel Viru was in our travel package, but was overbooked. And we were moved to then newly-opened hotel Telegraaf. Not terribly disappointed - Telegraaf is 5-star hotel. Anyway, hotel Viru met our expectations: a historic place since 1960s - though renewed inside respecting the old. To us, the Finnish, Viru reminds of the Estonian history back to 50 years and the old generation remembers how the first, I think it was even daily, ferry connection was established in 1960s. The service at Viru was good. Friendly and attentive staff. No queues. The breakfast was plentiful with traditional dishes with the "specialties" like Carelian pies. Nobody will be left hungry. Unfortunately we did not manage to experience hotel Viru's famous nightclub. But we believe, when meeting some hotel guests in the morning, that it would not been disappointment either...

Hotel has great location just next to old town but it is bit run down (stayed in 9th floor) and needs urgently facelift. Breakfast was average as quality and quantity of food was not impressive. Family room is spacious and can easily accommodate 3 adults - even 4. Reception and check in was smooth but check out time you need to reserve extra time a lot as 22 storey building has only 6 small lifts. Heard some people complaining that they have to wait 20 mins to get lift that has some room...

We stayed here from Saturday till Monday in March 2013. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. We had business class room on 9th floor. Great scenes towards the harbour. Room was spacious, clean and quiet. Beds were giant and mattresses very good. Breakfast was crowded on Sunday morning but on Monday there was easier to find place and food. Plenty to select from. Lovely fresh bread.
On Sunday evening we were going to go to Valuuttabaari but it was closed rather early.
Location was excellent, just few steps from Old Town gates.

Hotel with good location and with some very interesting history. There's a guided museum tour available which gives you information about the history of Viru hotel. Ladies at the reception were very helpful and friendly. There are some nice sceneries from the upper floor rooms. Rooms are basic and show some wear & tear, but are still quite okay.

Perhaps back in it's hay day in the 70's this might have been a 4-star hotel, but today, not so much. The nicest, most up-to-date area in the hotel is the bar and reception area, which you see as soon as you walk in. The rooms are worn, the bedding and towels thin, and the beds well used. The bathroom has not been recently updated. The photos online, definitely do it more justice than it deserves. The reception staff is helpful and polite. The location is fantastic, but do not expect a modern, contemporary hotel stay. It is more like a worn down version of what was probably fantastic in a day gone by. There is a restaurant, bar and disco on property and it is connected to a mall. We weren't there for shopping so not sure how much value that brings. Our room was clean and as a "family room" would be great for families traveling with small children. There are plastic bowls, cups, and spoons in the room and bath toys as well. The bunk beds were a hit with our kids who are a bit older than needing bath toys. In the end, for the amount that we paid, I wish we had gone with one of the other four stars or one of the other hotels that had similar or slightly higher rates.

Room Tip: Higher rooms have a nice view

Good location and friendly staff. We had a family room. Children mugs were ready in the room, but a bit torn. When we stepped into the room, it's very dusty: the desk surface, the TV bench, the shelves, etc.Hotel serves continental breakfast, with very limited options and limited amount.

Room Tip: Confirm with the receptionist that your room has just been cleaned on that day.
