“good hotel, good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2011

The hotel is good in every aspect, except location for which it is excellent - right off the bus from the airport, near the central bus stop, and on the doorstep of the old city. It is in the same building with a shopping mall including a tourist information and a supermarket.
Rooms are large, quiet and clean, if a little short on amenities, and short on soul. We had a nice view of both old town and the bay. Breakfast is very good, lots of choice, some of it interesting.
overall - a very good and convenient place from which to tour Tallinn and Estonia

Room Tip: go high, ask for a room with a view to the north

first visit to estonia and the hotel, my friends who are finnish have been here a few times before. not a bad hotel just a little tired looking in places .....the air con in our room didnt work ,and the bar in reception is lacking in staff... as on the day we were leaving the bar was well busy, and only one person serving drinks ...(mainly to the finnish) who are the main stayers here . the american diner is average food and above average prices ....but otherwise it filled a hole as i was starved !!. breakfast is ok but its like a cattle market if you leave it to late . i know it sound like im moaning but i would stay here again as it does what it says on the tin.......and its good on the wallet.

This hotel is in an excellent location, right next to the shopping centre Viru keskus and one block away from the old town. We had a room on the 18th floor and the view was spectacular!

We stayed in a Viru class-room (the cheapest category) and the room was bright and spacious. The furnishing was a little worn, though. The walls were quite thin, so if you're unlucky it might be quite noisy. The air-conditioning/heating wasn't working properly, so it was quite hot in the room (although it was cold outside).

There is free wifi in the hotel, the hotel breakfast had a good selection.

It is a very big hotel, so even if the receptionists were friendly, you had the feeling that they say exactly the same thing to hundreds of other people (ie. not very personalized service...). Also the hotel seemed quite bureaucratic, so don't expect to check-in before 2 pm sharp. All in all, we did enjoy our stay very much!

Stayed there on numerous occasions
, always for weekends. Great location as across the street from old town entrance. You can walk through hotel to big upmarket shopping center and hotel has few bars, nightlcub and restaurants.

Rooms are in need of updating as furniture shows stains and scuffs. Also breakfast is one of the poorest i have seen in the long while! But if you are looking for hotel thats in fantastic location and dont mind eating out its a good pick.

Located in the heart of the city, it's a nice place to stay. The rooms are nice & spacious - remember to use the upgrade option though. The service @ coffee shop could be improved though. The bar @ ground floor isn't that great - but the overall location & comfortable feel of the place covers up for it.

The hotel is clean and a short walk from the old town. If drunken Finns (there is a lot of them) is not a problem for you then this hotel is ok.

A legend hotel in Tallinn, the centre of espionage during the cold war, with KGB eavesdroppers, unbeatable landmark of city visible from all corners, the Viru hotel has known better days.

Though its Estonia's most succesful business unit, this is thanks to the owner, a mega Finnish co-operative, relying on its 1 000 000 million Finnish customer-owners, populating the place year round. It's true to say that half of the population of Finland has been here.

The hotel still has a legion of KGB style security guards patrolling the hotel, which adds to its nostalgia, mainly gone away. Spent 12 nights here at a 40EUR customer-owner per night rate for christmas 2009-New Year 2010. It's not like it used to be in the mid nineties, when I was here for an unforgettable experience.

First the positives
+ energetic and courteous multilingual reception staff
+new wing superior rooms
+views over tallinn
+location

Now the too many negatives
-appalling sleep quality in main building ( self-shutting guest roomdoors that slam so loud, it's like a motor highway, also tobacco guests visit balcony on each floor all the time and the balcony door shuts like a thunderstorm)
-main building rooms furniture and style out of date (needs complete renovation)
-bars have staff who do not know how to make any kind cocktails
-Amigo nightclub has known better days though its open 7 days a week and the only working hotel night club in Tallinn
-Hotel has only one main restaurant for lunch and dinner: a seedy, smelly, overcrowded Amarillo Tex-Mex restaurant/bar with someof the worst and most overpriced Tex Mex food in the world. There is no international cusine restuarant at the hotel open throughout the day though it has 600 rooms! That's unbelievable! We were forced not to use the hotel's food services for this reason. The Amarillo is one of the worst dining experience you can have in Tallinn and the restaurant staff is overworked unpleasant and indifferent. SOKOS operates 100 restuarants in Finland and they brought this to Tallinn! They could have put the Sevilla-spanish/international restaurant here as they have it in Finland and Russia.
-The huge Merineitsyt restaurant remebered from communist times is only open for breakfast and group reservations. This restaurant should be opened, so people can have a dining experience. The Amarillo is fittingly to be described as a * Räkälä* in the Finnish language. The Merineitsyt, however, has beautiful and nostalgic view over the central park.
-Breakfast was deappetising here ( redo it please)
-The room service was really bad ( only food from Amarillo was available at a surcharge)
-Minibars are empty and there's no minibar service
-Recreational facilities at hotel should be redone

Until the GM of this hotel takes these issues seriously, this hotel is not to be recommended. Regrettably, It has also almost completely lost its charm of the past.
