“Great Location, nice and clean”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2011

Excellent location, just 2m walk from the old town. Nice and clean and free, fast wifi, with breakfast included.

We stayed in the family room which was a large room with two double beds. It has a high ceiling with huge windows. Really lovely

The Staff are friendly, central location was excellent for the price, the wireless internet is reliable and the breakfast is very good. In all, I have returned to this hotel on several occasions as I feel it is comfortable and offers excellent value for money.

This hotel is a few minutes walk in a very clean underpass to the old town, so great for sightseeing. The rooms were basic, but clean and the beds were very comfortable. The buffet breakfast is very good, plenty of choice of cereals, breads, continental style hams, cheese etc. The reception staff all speak good english and were very helpful at all times. Free internet access at reception which was quite useful. I would stay here again due to the proximity to the old town and its attractions.

To start with the positives - the hotel is about 10mins by taxi from the airport. It is 5-10 mins to walk into the old town. There was no noise that we noted as mentioned in other reviews. The breakfast buffet is excellent - it is plentiful and included hot and cold food. Sets you up nicely for the day ahead. Fast Wi-Fi.
Onto the not so good points - the room is dark and unappealing. It was on the surface clean but underneath the bed and in the corners there was an accummulation of thick dust. The corridors were dark and dingy.
Main problem Number 1 - the room was extremely hot. A fan was provided but this only circulated the hot air. The windows do open fully but at night when you draw the curtains then the air is prevented from coming in. It is not air-conditioned. I tend to like to be warm and generally don't like air con but this was extremely warm and uncomfortable. No air con.
Main problem Number 2 - On one morning there was no water from the shower for over 2hrs. Another guest was complaining of the same problem at the reception the day before. When we complained we were told the manager was aware and it was because the hotel was full! We were told to try showering later in the day!! We didn't find this particularly acceptable.
Main problem Number 3 - The worst experience of our trip was using the restaurant. It is described as authentic German cuisine. When we went down the restaurant was empty so we probably should have had the common sense to go elsewhere. The speciality was pork shank. We also ordered a salmon steak and chicken fillet. As hotel guests we were also entitled to welcome schnapps and 10% off our bill. All the meals were quite clearly microwave meals. The salmon and chicken were barely acceptable but the pork was cold through. On complaining to the waitress she apologized profusely and then went to the kitchen. We said we would not be able to eat the food and would not be willing to pay for the pork dish. On returning from the kitchen she said that most of the pork meal had been eaten and therefore we had to pay for it. This was not true - it had barely been touched. At this point we asked to speak to the manager but the manager was conveniently not available. In the end we did not pay for the pork. We received the schnapps but were not given 10% of the rest of the bill and additionally charged the full price for the chicken which had been advertised in the menu as being on special offer. Biggest recommendation - DO NOT USE THE RESTAURANT - there are many restaurants outside a short distance away which you can and will enjoy! (Another customer was also complaining about the beer on tap not tasting right as well!)
In summary - 'ok' hotel close to Tallinn old town. Do not expect anything more than basics. Do not spoil your holiday by eating in the restaurant!! Most of the reviews for this hotel are good and it is afterall a 3* hotel but beware of the above points!!

The best thing about the St. Barbara is the location - just a few minutes from the old town, it also provides quite a good breakfast. Unfortunately the room was very small and to call the bed a double was to stretch the imagination, this was really a decent sized single. I would advise booking a twin as these rooms were more spacious and you may actually get some sleep - unless you are there on a Saturday night in which case you may not - given the level of noise from outside. The bathroom is quite spacious with a reasonable shower but no toiletries provided - you can purchase them from the lobby! The room was generally well kept and clean, except for the mildew on the shower curtain.
A point to beware of is that the reception desk, whilst stating in the hotel information guide that you can exchange money -does not acutally offer this facility. There are a couple of tables and chairs on the street outside the hotel and a couple at the back by the car park, but these were left wet with rain filled ashtrays.
Despite the less than perfect accommodation Tallinn itself was wonderful and a great place for a long weekend with plenty to do and see in the charming old town.

Room Tip: book a twin not a double

We stayed here and had a great time, friendly staff, a good hearty breakfast and a brilliant location, what more could you ask for? Literally two minutes from the centre of the old town across freedom square, passing the Tourist Information centre as you go. I would recommend this to everyone. The only reason I have scored the room 4/5 was that the bathroom was more like a wetroom and it is personal preference to have my shower closed off and not go everywhere!!
