“Nice rooms, terrible service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2013

We stayed in an annex building of the hotel (the Silver building). Absolutely no staff is available there, except for the cleaners. Although the building has an underground parking garage, actually getting in there is a nightmare: One first has to get the room keys at the main building. Then one should drive to the market place to buy the card for the weekly parking. The trick is, that one cannot get the room keys before 4pm and the parking place closes at 5.30 pm – of course nobody gives you this information before arrival. Your next chance to buy the card is 8am the next day. If you want to park on the street, you have to use the parking meters – which again means having to be up at 8 am on the first morning of your vacation, to start throwing money in the meters. Even when you think you win, you could still be out of luck: I did get the parking card, but by the time I drove back to the hotel and found out that it did not work, the parking office closed – and no staff was available to help.
Having said that, once you get through the hurdles of the check-in, you can have a nice stay. The building itself is well-maintained; the rooms are spacious and friendly. The lack of air conditioning can be a problem on the hot summer days. There is a pleasant little pool area which is especially nice with small children.
The location: It is close to downtown; about 15 minutes walk from the Lake, in a very quiet area of the town. Keszthely and the surroundings have a lot to offer, even in bad weather, so it is a good spot to explore the area from.

location in Kezsthely is excellent, reception staff speaks enough english to get things clear.

Otherwise, average and decent. Kitchen equipment are inadequate and poor quality. Pool in the E building is small and shallow.

Price for extra bed was too high compared to hungarian price level (3000 ft/night)

Having stayed in hundreds of different RCI affiliated resorts in North America and Europe, this was by far one of the best we've ever stayed in anywhere! And it was a much higher standard than any we've encountered in Eastern Europe.

Perhaps disappointed reviewers stayed in a different building than we did, but building Z, the one closest to the lake and directly across from Helikon park, was beautiful, clean, and nicely renovated with a quiet, green garden courtyard, with plenty of loungers and tables with which to enjoy the outdoor experience. The resort's unique buildings are all beautifully painted old-world style buildings surrounded by flower beds, which maintain their original European charm and are lovely to look at, as well as to stay in. We also enjoyed that the buildings are integrated into the surrounding neighborhoods, rather than being a separate high-rise condo somewhere outside of town.

Our unit had a partial kitchen, which included a microwave, coffee brewer, 2-burner cooktop, small refrigerator, sink, cabinets with plenty of cutlery (several pots, pans, lots of utensils for cooking and eating, etc.). Everything except for the fridge seemed new and fresh, and the furniture was painted in a soothing green color. The bathroom was extremely clean with new fixtures, excellent water-pressure, plenty of hot water, and even clothes-drying lines, which were handy. The beds and pillows were very comfortable and there were plenty of chairs, tables, desks, and lights. We'd recommend changing the incandescent light bulbs in the reading lamps for compact flourescents, not only to save electricity, but also to keep the lamps from becoming hot, as they became very hot to the touch after being left on for a while. The lake breezes kept the room cool at night with no A/C (one can also rent a fan, if desired), if one doesn't mind some street noise or brings earplugs. We did see a few stray ants, like one reviewer mentioned, but only when there were crumbs accidentally left on the floor. As long as there was no food on the floor, the ants stayed away; and we saw no other bugs during our stay.

The outdoor pool was very clean and well-maintained, had refreshingly cold water, and was surrounded by a beautiful, multi-tiered garden with lots of trees, so one could choose to be in shade or sun. The sauna facility was good, up to European standards (not like the little closet-type stand-alone saunas at American resorts, it is a proper sauna with showers, toilet, loungers, fireplace, etc.). The restaurant looked really nice and had good prices, but we didn't have the opportunity to eat there. The town centre and bus/train station were within an easy ten-minute walk, several grocery stores were a short walk away, and the lake was within a few minutes walk via Helikon park. The free wi-fi was a nice asset and worked well, even though it was only available in the main lobby.

The staff were extremely helpful and friendly, no matter what time of day or night, and even helped to carry our heavy bags. The cleaning service was excellent (several times in the week, not just once a week, as is usual) and the maids were friendly. All of the staff made us feel very welcome and answered all of our questions expertly.

Overall, we think that this is a great place to stay. It's an excellent location within a few hundred meters of Lake Balaton and within easy walking distance of all of the tourist attractions in town. It's also a good place to stay to visit nearby areas like Heviz, Little Balaton, Balaton Uplands National Park, and others. It's less than a block from the Balaton Bike Ring, so renting a bike at nearby GreenZone and riding around the lake is easy to do from this resort. It is a beautiful, well-maintained place which provided us with a clean room, restful sleep, and beautiful gardens in which to relax and enjoy the Lake Balaton area.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the gardens are quieter. Bring earplugs if street noise bothers you and you keep stree...

The unique point of difference with Club Abbazia at Keszthely is that the original and delightful streetscape is preserved (ie shady trees, roses in full bloom, older european style apartments). The accommodation is NOT a high rise international style hotel, and NOT a sprawling resort with manicured grounds and heaps of leisure facilities. It IS six original and quite separate apartment blocks located between the Keszthely town square and the lake - a very short walk to each. We stayed in a spacious loft apartment overlooking the park that surrounded Balaton (the largest lake in Europe). It was clean, and King size bed and lounge were comfortable. TV in room, Free internet in the administration block. In June, the temperature inside was just fine (No air-conditioning available, but windows and a fan). The lawns were freshly mown. There was locked, open-air, off-street parking available for a small price (about 2 minutes walk from our apartment.) The restaurant served good, tasty, reasonably priced meals and alcohol. The area has MUCH to offer (lake, fortresses, castles, museums, subterranean caves and waterways etc.) Abbazia offers a full program of trips, tours, etc. We preferred to explore ourselves! Driving in Hungary was really easy to drive with the standard GPS in our economy hired car. Staff spoke English, and were helpful and friendly at all times.
After reading a few mediocre reviews before booking; I was pleasantly surprised to find Abbazia a delightful place! We had a great holiday!

Room Tip: Don't expect a modern international hotel, or a resort with a welcoming event and all the bells...

I will probably come off as a spoiled American but if you are like me, continue to read. Do NOT believe any of the photos provided by this hotel. I felt like we had gone back to the Iron Curtain era. The unit was painted white with gray-green furnishings. The furniture and appliances were old. Toilet paper was the only amenity provided. Luckily I had packed soap. I will say the unit was clean and the dining room staff was very nice. The front desk staff was perfunctory and not helpful. The hotel has a restaurant and if you order carefully the food is good. Do not try dishes like pizza unless you like frozen food. The food is quite inexpensive and you can get full on $5.00. If spending the day traveling to historical sites and only using the room to sleep is what you want, then this is the place for you.

We had a great apartment within a short walk to the really lovely lake where you can walk and boat ride. It was very nice albeit different but the ants on the floor were just horrible. Nothing could be put down. UGH! This is a great area to traveling to Heviz and all around the Northern towns on Lake Balaton. We really had a good time despite our first impressions and the ants. Everyone was really friendly and helpful.

We were assigned to a huge unit - maybe because it was low season but well appreciated. We had 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, huge livingroom with private patio. The kitchen was in the livingroom. Beds were small - maybe full size beds? We travels quite often so we know not to expect too much from European exchanges. The place is simply decorated - things are outdated and old - TV is not flat screen and very small. Bring your own staff - nothing is provided except towels. I always bring seasonings in small plastic bags, dish detergent, scuff pad and dish towels along with all the personal items.
We had a rental car and GPS to guide us through one way streets which worked great!
We found Hungarian people not really friendly - but Mr. Gabor at front desk was very nice and helpful. He was one of few who spoke English there.
There is restaurant around and it is very reasonable. Our unit faced street and you can hear everything ....if you are staying here at the peak season, you may have problem.
Over all, it is good base for exploring Lake Balaton area. There is visitor information at downtown, the hotel can give you the voucher for discount pass (mostly 10% off). They charge you few $ for the card but it will be refunded if you bring it back .
