“Beautiful Interiors and Great Views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

The inside of the church is amazing.... and the views outside are spectacular!
Be in good shape if you made the climb all the way to the dome... and make sure you're not afraid of tight spaces or heights... and have patience - the line up and down moves slow...

A little drive out of Budapest... but for those who like history, architecture, and church finery - definitely a must see.

“Esztergom Basillica”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2013

Like others we did a day trip from Budapest but had no idea what a jewel this cathedral is. We just happened to enter the cathedral while a mass was in progress. The allowed about 10 of us in an area behind the pews that was roped off and as long as we were quiet and not flashing they were OK with it. The organ and choir were amazing in part due to the acoustics. After the services, we were allowed into the main area beneath the cupola. The cupola is huge and beautiful as is all the surrounding lower areas. Just beyond the cupola is a simple silver and gold altar. Beyond the altar, there is a gorgeous painting of the assumption of Mary. Its the largest single canvas painting in any cathedral in the world, and stunning. We also went into the catacombs below and took the winding stairs up next to the cupola and saw the views of the "bend" of the Danube which were beautiful. We considered this a highlight of our tour of Prague, Passau, Salzburg, Vienna, Melt, Bratislava and Budapest. This was an add-on to our Viking cruise that we arranged separate from Viking, and definitely was an excellent choice.

“Wonderful day trip from Budapest”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2013

We took a day drip by car from Budapest stopping in Szentendre, Visegrad and Esztergom. It's a pleasant, easy drive and offers a different perspective than the city experience of Budapest. The basilica towers above everything - it is massive and watching it appear and grow in the wilndshield is an awesome experience.
There is no fee to enter the basilica, but there is a small fee to climb the hundreds of narrow, winding stairs to the top - don't miss that experience. The view is unlike anything I've seen in Europe. The pretty little town of Esztergom colors the country side in rich, earthy tones of red, yellow, orange, green. The Danube separates Hungary from Slovika as it winds and bends. It is simply breathtaking (okay, some of that is the stairs) but absolutely one of the best experiences we had in Hungary.

“3th biggest Basilica”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2013

I like start to visit Basilica from slovakian side of Duna river. Amazing view on 100 m tollest Basilica and posibility to take very interesting pictures. In time of its last buiding was the 11th biggest buiding in the world. From bottom part after climbing upstairs is very nice view around to Duna river, Hron river and bridge to Štúrovo town. Every time I combine this trip with visiting local thermal area in Ezstergom or Štúrovo
