This church is a really nice church, out side and inside. If you are a tourist you should visit there not only because of the church but surrounding area in so nice, there are some nice restaurants in that area as well.

“Climb to the cupola”

Make sure you go to the basilica and take a walk up to the cupola and old bell tower. Great views - well worth it.

“Stunning”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2012

It's a relatively short ride to Esztergom from Budapest by car. Huge and impressive Basilica with a fantastic view. Enjoy the wine tasting/exhibition almost underneath the basilika (take the staircase down from the parking lot).
Stop on your way from Budapest in Visegrad castle.

“Basilica on the Hill”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2012

Esztergom was at one time the seat of the King of Hungary as well as the center of the Hungarian Orthodox Church. This beautiful basilica sits atop a hill overlooking the Danube River and Sturovo, Slovakia, which is right across the river.

Visitors can reach it one of two ways. Either by approaching the front of the building from a huge pathway and up a hill, off Esztergom's main street, or by a little stone staircase built into the hillside, accessible from Esztergom's Water Town, which is the oldest and most historic part of town, near Primate Island. I like this approach best because it's fun to explore Water Town, and then to discover these little steps in the hillside, which are entered between two buildings. Climb up amidst blossoming wild flowers while looking out over the river.

Red marble is incorporated into the building, which is the tallest building in Hungary. The inside space is huge, with a giant dome topping the it. Inside visitors can see some beautiful artwork, they can visit the mysterious crypt, or they can simply sit on the back steps and look out over the Danube and enjoy the glorious view.

The Esztergom Basilica played a major role in Hungarian history and is only a short 1.5 hours by train from Budapest. It makes an excellent day trip and is definitely worth the extra effort to get out of the city. Tourists may also find river cruises in Budapest that travel to Esztergom by boat. The citadel of Visegrad is nearby, and the river is beautiful and peaceful in this region, so a boat tour is also a spectacular way to reach Esztergom and catch your first glimpse of the Bascilica. Considering the important role this building plays in Hungary's fascinating history, and also considering that Esztergom is an interesting town with other unique sights, it's definitely worth visiting if you have the time.

“Spectacular inside & out”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2012

One of the most impressive things about this Basilica is that it dominates the skyline for miles around. Said to be the tallest building in Hungary, you start seeing it for some distance before you get there, and if you arrive at the bottom of the bluff on the Danube, it's a massive and remarkable structure. Built on the tallest site for miles, one occupied by other structures over the centuries, it is the dominant feature of Esztergom. Built relatively recently, 19th century, the interior is beautiful, featuring the largest single canvas oil painting in Europe. The climb to the top of the dome is a must, with amazing views of the city of Esztergom and the Danube.
