“Good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2013 via mobile

We came here the night before for one of the famous deserts. And once we saw the meal menu thought to try it. Brilliant goulash and tender hock joint. Recommend

“Memorable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2013

This is one of our best food memories of Budapest. We sat outside and people watched as we ate the scrumptious caramel Sundae. Next time we came for the mouth watering goose liver terrine which melts in your mouth, and yet again for an excellent salad and more caramel Sundae. The staff is OK, the price is a bit expensive, but worth while. If you go do not leave without visiting the inside on the pretext of going to the toilet, wander around to see the historic furnishing and great fireplace. One of the metro-tram lines stops right at the entrance of the garden seating.

“Very impressive...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2013

as far as the food and atmosphere is concerned. The staff is very stiff and very cold and did not really want us there. We went for breakfast before our flight to Frankfurt and the place was pretty empty. We were dressed for traveling so we didn't have a very sophisticated look but it was Tuesday morning and no one was there so what was the reason for the attitude? We had the breakfast for two and it was plentiful and delicious. Water is served in a shot glass and refills seem to be unwelcome. Yes, I'm American, I apologize but I just wanted to have breakfast. Plates and cups were snatched up before we were finished and I will not apologize for telling you to put it back. Maybe it was a bad day? We loved Budapest and Hungary in general but Gerbaud was a bit of a disappointment.

“Didn't live up to expectations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2013

Came here for coffee and cake, at the recommendation of friends who raved about it. We didn't have quite the same positive experience. Sat outside but the tables were crammed closely together and the atmosphere wasn't as pleasant as we expected. Also we looked forward to trying the "cake selection", and although some of it was great (especially the ice-cream), some pieces were dry and disappointing. And it's pricey, especially for Budapest. But it's worth going inside to see the full range of cakes they offer. And maybe sitting inside would have provided a better experience.

“Touristy Institution”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2013

Worth trying if have the money to burn, but go in knowing you are not getting a bargain and the experience is expensive. Tort combination plate selections (1-3 small tort pieces preselected and without substitutions, some with small scopes of walnut and/or chocolate ice cream) are between 2200-4400 florins (about 10-20 dollars) at the time of review. A latte will set you back about 1000 florins, a large about 1400. A bottle of water is similar in price. Get a discount for take out, but you are really there as much for the place as for the cake, so might as well stay and take it all in. Great circuses, excellent borderline outstanding quality, solid if somewhat variable service which gets an automatic 15% tip (on top of the prices above, and don't forget taxes), Gerbaud is never a bargain. Do it once so you can say you've done it. They also do have light sandwiches and salads, also prices at the very high range (a few thousand florins).
