Owner description: The Holocaust Memorial Center is a national institution established by the Government in 1999. In 2002, it decided to construct the building of the Center in Pava Street, outside of the traditional Jewish quarter, further emphasizing its national character. The Holocaust Memorial Center is one of the few institutions in the world, established by the state, that focuses entirely on Holocaust research and education. The visitors are welcomed into a unique space that was named as the most impressive in Budapest, beside the city's panorama itself by Frank Owen Gehry, one of the leading architects in our time. The modern building is organically linked to the Pava Street Synagogue, an authentic venue that once used to be the second largest site for Jewish worship in Budapest. The Institution is a center for scientific research education and culture. It welcomes visitors with interactive permanent and special periodic exhibitions, experience-based museum pedagogical programs and cultural performances. Guided tours are available in five languages and special, thematically focused tours are offered regularly. A bookshop and a cozy coffee shop contribute to a memorable visit.

amazing place. I got myself getting very, very touched. The scenery, the music, the excibition, the colors are placed in such a right way, that allows you to get the feeling - as if you were there. Don't miss it

“So moving and displayed so well”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2012

This museum is a bit off the beaten track but not difficult to find and well worth a visit. Ferenc Korut metro station is about 10 minutes walk away. It costs about £4 to get in, but there are discounts available for students, etc. It is attached to a synagogue, built in 1923, although the Memorial Center is contemporary. I had not realised how large a Jewish community had existed in Hungary prior to the Second World War - about one in 40 of the population - and how circa 500,000 became victims. The interactive displays, which are in both Hungarian and English, root what happened in a history going back before the Nazis. It demonstrates the contribution made to the nation by Jews both collectively and with individual family histories. The rooms on the genocide are very disturbing, but a strong reminder of what can happen when various groups are scape-goated (apart from Jews, the displays mention the Roma people, other religious and homosexuals). You should allow a good hour to take in the minimum, but we spent at least two hours on the premises.

“Haunting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

If you are reading this, you are considering a visit. A few words of advice for you, do it! It is one of the best of various similar attractions around Europe that I have visited, it is cheap too and that aside is a must see irrespective of cost. Highly recommended.

“very well laid out I think”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2012

It provides a lot of information about that era in general and also about particular Jewish families which makes you understand how their lives were getting worse and worse. In the synagogue the interactive wall of memories where survivors talk about their stories was not working. There was no sound (or maybe it was just me).
All in all very interesting and sobering experience.
