Owner description: The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble - regarded as one of the best in Hungary, was established in 1951.Its aims were to collect and play authentic folk music and to preserve the Hungarian folk dances and traditional costumes of Hungarian-inhabited areas by putting them on stage for the public.During the more than five decades of its existence, the Ensemble has achieved its aim by revitalizing the culture of the Hungarian people. Their rich and colourful repertoire entitled the Ensemble to be regarded as one of the top touring groups in the world. It has performed in 44 countries across four continents and won the admiration of an audience of more than seven and a half million people. In the last few years the Ensemble encountered special interest in the United States and Canada - which was illustrated by their fourth invitation to undertake a three-month coast to coast American tour in 1994. They have also toured the Far East and Western Europe. The Ensemble consists of 30 dancers, 14 members of the Gipsy Orchestra and 5 members of the Hungarian Folk Orchestra. The choreographies are all based on authentic dances, some of them were collected in isolated villages with dance elements dating back hundreds of years. The extraordinary folk music that inspired Liszt, Bartok and Kodaly is put on stage by both the Folk Orchestra and the world-famous Gipsy Orchestra. The 5 members of the Folk Orchestra play authentic, traditional instruments and perform Hungarian folk music at its highest artistic level. The famous Gipsy Orchestra plays both dance accompaniments and performs alone. Their rich repertoire includes folk music which inspired Hungarian and international classical composers such as Liszt, Brahms, Kodaly and Bartok. Aside from its performances around the country and abroad, the Ensemble gives approximately 90-100 annually performances in its Corvin square theatre, in the Budai Vigado.

“Too much repetition!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2014

We attended the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble for an evening performance at Budai Vigado titled "Bittersweet .. Dance to Transylvanian Folk Music". It started out very nice but soon the repetition of each of the dances became wearing. For the 6200 HUF ($28 USD) per seat, we were disappointed. The Budai Vigado venue was a small theatre that looks like it was partitioned from a large room in an older stately building. The most expensive seats, the ones we bought, were in the back 4 rows of the theatre furthest from the stage .. we thought that to be odd. I will say that the dancers performed well, and the dances were physically challenging. Just too much of a good thing. Maybe some of the other performances have more variety.

“Heartily recommended! ”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2014

Took my wife to this show for her birthday. The music - I don't know from dancing - was great, and she liked the costumes. The performance is very high energy, and you could see why the dancers hadn't an ounce of fat on them.
You could buy DVDs after the show, but if you want your own photos then you should take a seat closer to the front than the theatre recommend. This because other people's heads get in your way, and because of the fall-off of light. Sitting in row 7, and with a 24mm prime on an APS-C camera you cover more than the width of the Duna Palatine stage

“Full of energy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2014 via mobile

Instead of a group of people going through the motions which I half expected, the dancers and musicians gave an energetic and highly skilled performance. An interesting look into a different side of Hungary. Highly recommended.
