We Stayed here between 21st and 24th Jan 08
The hotel is very basic and very thin walls ,you can hear every thing even light switches being turned on.
On a positive note though, the Hotel was immaculate and very warm. The staff were very helpful and friendly .My wife and I walked everywhere ,we needed to loose some of the xmas weight!!!!
If we did go again we would stay nearer to pest or on pest
we didnt spend a great deal of time in the hotel so it didnt matter too much but for what it costs it was still very good valur for money

The special offer was only £10 per night including breakfast (early Dec.) and good value - large clean bedroom and bathroom but noise from other rooms. Breakfast good and plentiful. Reception staff friendly and helpful with good English. Although it's near transport (and night buses pass by) it's a bit far out and getting places can be confusing. We arranged a taxi from and to the airport via the hotel (now 30 Euros each way) but found out later there is a minibus service bookable at the airport arrival lounge or by phone. Wouldn't advise buying a Budapest Card (too expensive for what it covers) but a normal travel card is essential. Buses, trams and underground all efficient and fun.
Weather was cold, misty, rainy with no views, but worth it anyway.

from reading other reviews before I went to this hotel, it said it was basic but nice and rooms were soundproof. This is not true, I could here all other guests at night, even just going to the loo and the breakfast was awful. On a good note it was clean and on the buda side, so if you want to see buda, its well located.

Have read varying reviews on this site, most of them are really petty whinges. The hotel is a 20 minute walk an a shade hilly on the return but hey I'm nearly 50 and managed it. The no's 8 and 112 run into town at regular intervals and you can get a night bus from Ferenciec Tere. The shower in our room was a little fierce but the room was clean and warm. If you want central then you gotta pay 200 euros per night. Unless you arrive in the wee small hours then get the no.2 bus to Kobanya-Kispest then metro 3 to Deak Ferenc Ter , even cheaper than Zona who are the cheapest and best

Overall Hotel Bara is a good cheap place to stay in Budapest. It's a bit out of the way of the action over in Buda, but bus, tram and metro connections are all within walking distance.

The room I was in (316) was clean and comfortable, with fully controllable heating. The TV was OK, though the only channels in English are EuroNews and some bits of MTV Germany. The remote was handed over at check in! The shower was excellent and was very hot and powerful. There's a small fridge/minibar with just about enough space for you to put a few things in. The only bin and mirror were in the bathroom. There's a built in wardrobe with some shelves to store all your stuff.

Breakfast finishes at 10am (no idea when it starts) and provides a large selection of food to help start the day; sausages, eggs, cereals, ham, cheese, bread, yogurts, cakes, tea, coffee and some extremely watered down fruit juices. I can't say I went hungry in Hungary!

The staff spoke English and were very helpful whenever asked about things. They also provided somewhere behind lock and key to keep bags when you've checked out. It should be noted that checkout is advertised being at both 10am and midday, and the staff compromised by saying 11am!

Of course not everything is perfect and there are a few problems with Hotel Bara. All the corridors have tiled floors which has a nasty side effect of allowing sound to bounce all over the place. Also the walls are on the thin side. As a result the sound of people talking or closing/slamming doors can quite easily be heard which is an annoyance.

But the biggest noise problem (not UK stag parties, must have been a bit cold for them in October) was the building site next door. Around 7am every morning the builders would start up and your sleep would stop. Strangely they worked on Saturday morning, but not Sunday or Monday.

So overall it's a good cheap place to stay, but bring your ear plugs!

The hotel is basic but very clean. The shower is very good. Breakfast was okay for the money you pay for the room. Staff are very helpful. Yes it can be a bit noisy, due to other unconsiderate guest returning to rooms at all times of the night. It is on the buda side and in my opinion a bit too far away from the main central streets. We did eventually by a travel pass which is well worth the money. The bus stop is 25mtrs down the road and the pass allows you to use the buses, trams and underground. There transport system is very efficient. Yes be warn about taxis. 1st night hotel arranged taxi for us it cost 1500 to get to centre. Got in a taxi at the rank to bring us back 4000 a bit of a rip off. Make sure you get hotel and restaurants to order taxis for you.

We arrived at Budapest airport and decided to get a taxi to the hotel. We had been warned numerous times about the extortionate taxi prices but found the Zona Taxi’s outside the terminal to be the cheapest during our stay. The concierge asks your hotel, looks at the zone and then you can see the price, dependant on your zone, on the various brochures, posters etc.

The Bara is on the Buda side of the Danube, over the bridge and towards the Citadel & Liberation Monument. The street name is Hegyalja and it is difficult to get lost as you just follow that road to the hotel & back to Pest. It can be a little lonely at night if walking. It will take you 20-30 minutes to walk down to the bridge or ‘across country’ and under the castle tunnel to the Chain bridge. The Bara is situated directly on Hegyalja and after some confusion at the reception I was finally allocated my room. It was clean, typically grey and ‘eastern block’ style but on saying that I didn’t intend to spend too much time in it. Immediately I noticed how thin the walls were and there was no need for inter room telephones as the shower ducts carried the conversations with ease. In the room was a fridge, very basic TV and a clean bathroom. The shower was excellent. The towels were a little past their sell by date. The duvet was a blanket inside a top sheet but the room was quite warm. The view was over looking the rear conference room towards the more basic hotel, the Bara Junior. Be aware that the thin walls are extremely thin at 4am when intoxicated residents return home. I found the hotel to be very noisy with doors banging most of the night. The conversation at breakfast was that the hotel was at one time called the ‘Barracks’, but now Bara for short 

Breakfast was in the dining room opposite reception and it was extremely busy. I had to share a table with other guests and despite the language barriers we managed to spill each others coffee’s. The usual array of breads, hams, cheeses, scrambled eggs, sausages, yoghurts etc. awaited us and for what you pay to stay at the Bara, the breakfast is sufficient. Self serve tea & coffee and watered down fruit juice. Within 20 minutes the dining room emptied as the coach tour organiser gathered his clients.

The advice from reception was not to get ‘street taxi’s’ but to get the bars, hotels, restaurants to call them for you. Whatever the case I always felt that someone was taking a slice, as the price was never the same. It is good advice to stay clear of ‘street taxis’ and also any bars that advertise the table / lap dancing… unless of course you are extremely naive & rich  There are numerous ‘well priced’ restaurants and bars in the city.

Budapest is a truly amazing city, with fantastic panoramic views across the Danube. Would I stay at the Bara again… No, I would look for something more central. Would I recommend it to friends or family… No, unless they were on an extremely tight budget.
