“Great Italian restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2013

We come from a city which has 500,000 Italians and more Italian restaurants than you can count. We stumbled upon Da Mario without knowing very much about it other than it had been recommended by another Italian Restaurant that was closed that evening. Had a great dining experience. Friendly service in a lovely setting, al dente pasta (pumpkin tortellini in a butter sage sauce) and the thinnest pizza you could ask for. Clearly one of if not the best inexpensive Italian Restaurant in Budapest.

“Visit on a quiet night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2013 via mobile

We made two visits to this restaurant during our stay in Budapest and the two experiences could not have been more different.
Our first visit was on a quiet Sunday evening as we were looking for place to eat having arrived earlier that day. The restaurant itself is located in a beautiful part of town near the US embassy and parliament and has outside seating down a quiet side road. We were seated and the person who appeared to be the manager took care of us superbly, recommending a lovely Hungarian wine, dealing with our order quickly and in a very warm and friendly manner as well as bringing us complementary bread and olive oil and balsamic vinegar to start with. On this experience I would rate it as five star.

Our friends joined us in Budapest on the Wednesday and we thought we would take them there. There were more people there but it was not full and we decided to eat inside. We placed our order and asked what one of the ingredients was and the waiter brought out a small bowl of artichokes. We asked at the time if he was sure as artichokes were mentioned by name on another dish but he said he was certain. The waiter checked our order with us and we ordered a bottle of wine. This was a mistake. For the rest of the evening the waiter kept trying to sell us another bottle of wine to the point that it became quite irritating when we hadn't finished the one we had anyway. He also forgot to order one of the main courses meaning that 3 of us had our food and one had to wait another 20 minutes for her food to arrive. As well as this, the artichoke which the waiter showed us was not present in the meal our friend ordered and it seems the mystery ingredient was capers, which he would not have chosen. Due to this and constantly having to say no to wine (not usually in our nature) we decided to ask for the bill, which we had to do three times (I'm sure if we had asked for wine it would have been sorted out instantly), and not pay the service charge. At this point the nice manager who served us the first night got involved and we explained the situation and received an apology.
The food and wine were still good the second time but the service left us feeling annoyed.

“Lovely food and atmosphere, poor service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

We had great food here - as usual - in a very nice location, with the Italian owner carefully guarding service, and nagging waiters to be faster. He chatted with everyone and made people feel very welcome.
However when we received the menu cards they did not ask us what we wanted to drink , so it took quite long to get our first drink.
The waiters were very polite and knowledgeable about the food and we had lovely dishes. Congratulations to the cook! This made us quickly forget the slow start.
The sad part was the end, when after having paid the bill, we noticed there was an extra rose wine on the bill. We complained. The waiter did not seem very suprised or overly appologetic, so we had a vague feeling it was done on purpose rather than by mistake. He first asked us, whether we would like the rose we had paid for (did not ask if we ever ordered it). We told him we did not order the wine and would not like to get it either. He then tried to ask us whether we are likely to return - I guess he was trying to give us something else than the refund. We said we weren't sure. He then - somewhat reluctantly - said in that case he will give us back the cash. He returned with 800 Ft (price of the rose) but somehow forgot the compulsory 10% tip we had to pay on top of the wine (as on everything else). We left it that - but are not likely to return very soon as this small episode ruined the trust.
