My family (myself, wife, 3 year old son, mother and father-in-law) have just returned from a 4 night stay at the Burg Hotel. We stayed in 2 large rooms.
Most of the reviews below are right on: it is a good place for the price. It is very clean. Just don't expect any extras: Staff is at an absolute minimum. There is a single person at the desk at any one time. No concierge. A single woman busses tables and brings out food for the morning meal. There is a bell boy there about 30% of the time. However we never had to wait for anything and felt like everything was properly attended to.
All the people running the front desk spoke English beautifully and were very helpful when they could be. I say when they could be because they couldn't recommend restaurants due to some recent problems. This was quite a surprise. How many times have you gone to a hotel regardless of rating and not been able to get a recommendation for a good restaurant nearby? It seems minor but it was definitely unexpected and it certainly affected our trip.
Bathroom was good size. Small shower. Clean as a whistle. Miniscule tv, but who cares? I didn't go to Budapest to watch Hungarian tv.
There is a single internet station where you can buy time in 30 minute chunks. I find it difficult to believe every hotel doesn't offer wireless connectivity in this day and age.
The location is a double edged sword. It is wonderfully quite there at night. The views from the Fisherman's Bastion are remarkable. The view of St. Matias from the view side of the hotel is spectacular. And the sweet shop Ruywurm next to the hotel is dynamite. However, the long trek down the hill every morning and back up every night was quite exhausting. This may not be an issue for most since we walked everywhere and didn't take the bus. Also, the restaurants in the castle are quite expensive. And since no one at the Berg was able to recommend one over the other, picking a good restaurant was a bit of a crap shoot.
Pillows were indeed thin, but we managed fine.
Another huge plus: we drove to the Berg from the Czech Republic and I have no idea how we eventually got there. But street parking is plentiful, safe and free. This is nice considering parking at the nearby Hilton was 20 euros a night. So we saved ourselves a good chunk of change by parking on the street.
Overall, I'm happy with the hotel. It is certainly a good value for the money. But it's a Honda Civic, not a BMW 5 series.
