“Wonderful Place to Stay in Budapest”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

This is an older hotel - it shows its age in some ways - but you cannot beat the location. Walk out of the hotel lobby, cross the Liberty Bridge and you find yourself on Vaci Street. The rooms are large with high ceilings and clean. The room appointments are nothing fancy - very simple but functional. Most of all, it was clean. The staff are first rate - what you expect to see at a hotel of this "grand old style. Every staff member I came in contact with spoke impeccable English - a plus for me since, ashamedly, I do not speak Hungarian. The breakfast buffet was almost overwhelming there were so many choices. Do not hesitate to stay here. The rooms on the north side are probably quieter since there is a street car stop right across the street from the south wing of the hotel. Although not part of the hotel, there are some famous hot bath/spa connected to the hotel building that are, as I understand, quite famous.

Have just returned from a long week-end in Budapest and stayed in the Gellert as my husband was attending a conference there. We have been several times to this turn of the early 20th century "grand hotel" with spa baths along side. First went in the days of communist rule and it was extremely run down and dreary. On each subsequent visit there have been improvements. It is old fashioned - free standing rather heavy furniture and virtually no "frills" ie basic TV but the rooms - which vary from spartan to slightly more upmarket if you have a Danube river view - are clean, the staff pleasant and the prices very reasonable. Generous buffet breakfast included in room price although not really enough staff on hand to cope with the week-end crowd. Direct access to the thermal baths and for hotel guests the first visit is free. Overall I would say good if you are on a budget and/or want to take the family.
Late autumn/early winter a good time to go - Christmas markets already there and The Museum of Terror on Andrassy St chronicling the period 1944-1956 ie Nazi and Communist occupations not to be missed.

Room Tip: Ask for a river view room on 4th floor - double glazing installed so noise of trams quite manageable...

Over the last ten years, my wife and I (sometimes alone) have been fortunate to stay at the Gellert some seven or eight times. Yes, it has seen changes during that time, but we would not want to spend our break in Budapest at any other hotel for many reasons. It is, of-course, excellent value for money. The location is convenient for sightseeing and many rooms overlook the Danube. Breakfast is of good quality and varied and the staff at reception, the doormen and Gabor, the present barman, are all very friendly, courteous, helpful and knowledgeable. The hotel is a grand building that has history and a soul. The beautifully-decorated spa, of-course, is an added bonus. Don't be put off by comments regarding the need for refurbishment of rooms,- the furniture is old and marked but this only adds to the faded grandeur of the place. It would not suit everybody especially those who prefer to stay in a blingy, sterile and modern environment. But for those who like old-world charm the Gellert has a lot going for it. Guests should know what to expect from previous reviews and should stay away if what they read is not to their liking. Many of the negative comments are not warranted. For us, the Gellert ticks many boxes and we shall continue to return on a regular basis.

Building is amazing and almost intimidating when we arrived. We had read the lonely planet review and were not expecting total luxury. We chose it for it's location and also because it ticked one of our boxes by having the spas within the premesis which were free for guests to use!

Room was VERY basic, kind of early 70's style. Nice big balcony which would be great in the summer. Great view of both Gellert Hill and the river.
Bathrooms was a bit old looking with a few spot of rust here and there, but overall clean looking. Shower is over a bath and the shower hose and head could have at least been newer.
But, like I said, adequate.
We had to pay to have internet in our room, which is fine, just be aware this worked on my windows pc, but not on my partner's Macbook and they could not fix the mac problem.
Nice big complimenory breakfast served each morning in the restaurant.
Baths felt dated and tired, but were relaxing, turns out guests get one free pass to the spas and then a discounted rate after that. Mostly older people using them for health reasons. You have to wear a shower cap when you use the pool, which I thought was rather wierd.
24 hour reception is very handy for holidayers like ourselves. Also the 'free' (Hungry love thier tips) luggage storage on the last day after checkout is great.
Overall, it was a pleasant experience, although having been there now we would not have chosen it based on the spas :-) But it is a basic hotel, not sure I would give it the 4 stars it has though.

Room Tip: Ask them about the view when checking in and the higher the better.

Location is on a busy corner and the rooms are very noisy. In addition there were rooms with at least 3 guys in them that partied all night every night. No matter how many nights I called the front desk to complain all they would do was call the room and I could hear them say "F it" and get louder. Three nights in this hotel and less than 3 hours sleep each night. Would never stay there again. Loved Budapest would have liked to see it without being sleep deprived.

This was our 1st time in Budapest. Family from Budapest recommended this place and when i looked into it found it was the in the right location at the right price.
When we arrived the entrance was breathtaking. At checkin they where helpful and spoke some english and german but should improve for more international appeal. They did help translated with a relative who visited.
The rooms are ok but not to the standard of the rest of the hotel. Decor was dated and the bathroom needed refurbishment.
Breakfast was awesome. Attentive service, a good selection, and a great setting.
The bar was nice for an aperitif/digestif but more for an older crowd.
We walked or caught the tram from out the front to everywhere in Budapest. It was close to everything without being in the middle of everything.
The spa was beautiful but confusing to get in and around (the locker system is cold war era).

We chose the hotel because of its reputation. While antiquated (only one physical key to a room was available, and the air-conditioning was limited, the room was comfortable, spacious, and with a great view of the Danube & the Pest side of the city. The breakfast (included) was terrific, and The dinner and entertainment at the restaurant was most enjoyable.
The location was excellent, as it is located on the Buda side, at the foot of the Liberty Bridge, below the Liberty Monument on the Citadel, right on a tram / bus stop that could take you anywhere in minutes.
The only free access to the internet was in the lobby of the mezzanine level, which was a bit inconvenient, and the service could be problematical, but overall, it worked well.

Room Tip: You want a room overlooking the Danube. It's worth the extra cost.
