“Design Fairs, Cafes, and Antiques”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2012

Gozsdu Courtyard is a walkway that runs between Kiraly utca and Dob utca. You can tell that in the last century it was a beautiful arcade inhabited by wealthy flat dwellers who had balconies overlooking the walkway below. Today it has recently been restored to something of its former glory. It is actually a little too much on the shiny brand spanking new side, but that's okay. Better than it being run-down and shabby like much of Budapest was after the Communists left power.

Beautiful building facades and wrought iron balcony railings, all with gorgeous Secessionist details, greet you when you pass through. The courtyard is filled with little cafes, coffee shops, boutiques, and even an antique store, in addition to entrances to the flats above.

The best thing about the Gozsdu Courtyard, however, is the design fair held there each Sunday from April to October. Local designers and artisans come out to sell their wares. Some of the things you can purchase are handmade jewelry, pottery, Hungarian foodstuffs like honey and jams, but particularly clothing, leather goods, and jewelry. It's easy to spend a few hours wandering through, checking out the wares for sale, having an espresso or latte along the way.

Nearby Kiraly utca is also full of interesting shops, cafes, and cukraszdas, which are Hungarian confectionaries. Dob utca, at the other end of the courtyard, contains a fascinating mixture of a little bit of everything, a little side street that is worth a quiet stroll. Both streets have really nice playgrounds the kids will enjoy, with swings, slides, and zip lines. You can make a nice afternoon of lunch, shopping, coffee, and playing around, if having children in tow applies. In a town where they is woefully too little to do on Sundays, Gozsdu Courtyard is a welcome bustling happy place to spend a Sunday afternoon. Take some time to enjoy it if you are in town on a Sunday between April and October.

“Historic mixed with current themes”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2012

The Gozsu udvar is first an architectural achievement connecting 7 buildings with one courtyard spanning a block, Then it has historical significance. This is where thousands of Jews were held captive during WWII. There is a commemorative plague outside the Kiraly u.entrance. For the last few summers, almost each Sunday, the courtyard comes alive with vendors selling crafts, paintings, jewelry, food items, and more. There are a few temporary food vendors that join the mix and often there is live entertainment. This generally stops by the end of September.

Our apartment was very near here. As a result, we ate in several restaurants & bars. Quality a bit uneven.

“City in the city”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2012

This is the best way to preserve history, architecture and offer great entertainment for the youth. The old Jewish neighborhood loaded with cages, bars and restaurants. I had great time watching some football game on the stands facing a big screen.
