We visited the Basilica specifically to listen to the organ and singing concert on a Monday. A truly beautiful experience to feel the music wash over you whilst your eyes are able to absorb the powerful and dramatic images in the church.
The interior has a solemn calm beauty about it, with amazing pink marble in different shades depending where you look, gold leaf decorations without being over the top, and really lovely frescos. There is this great balance and contrast between the white and light of statues, ceiling and altar, offset by the darker columns and flooring.
For me, this was the best way to absorb the basicilia. I've been to a number of churches where you you just go in, go 'yeah ok very nice' maybe read a pge or 2 of a leaflet, and walk out. With a concert, you have time to think and ponder on the images you are looking upon and give yourself time to appreciate where you are.
I saw reviews saying how some people didn't want to pay the nominal donation to go and visit the church, or when they paid and saw it they weren't impressed, or there wasn't enough information inside - If those reviews are causing you concern and you fee like you want to do something to get your moneys worth and more I can definitely recommend this.
There are concerts on various nights - we went on a Monday which has the shortest and cheapest (even less with a Budapest card!) concert of 45 minutes. The duration was perfect for us and the music selections were easy to listen to, you don't have to be a music aficionado (we certainly aren't!).
Afterwards we walked about the church to explore and take some pictures too.
