“beautiful church, in a beautiful spot in the castle district”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013

Please do not miss to visit this church, every thing -outside and inside- is very well done, with a lot of care ( that was how I felt ). precious articles could be seen where ever you look. In brief I can say that it is a "wonderful" church.

“Real Gem of a church.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013

This church is in the final stages of being restored, as evidenced by the people still hand painting the patterns on the walls. It is without a doubt the most beautiful church we saw on our travels. The walls are painted with various geometric and floral patterns. We wondered if this was the remaining influence of the period when Budapest was controlled by the Turks and this church was converted into a mosque. The designs on the ceiling and walls were incredibly beautiful and a wonderful change from the overly ornate Baroque churches that are common here. Definite inspiration for quilters here! A tip : purchase of a ticket to St Matthias Church includes a discount on the tour of the Hospital in the Rock.

“Fantastic despite works.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2013 via mobile

Yea there is renovation and it can be noisy. On the other hand - not always possible to watch restorers at work and there is still a lot to see. And don't miss looking at the outside from a all the angles!

“Incredible!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2013 via mobile

This church is an iconic landmark in Budapest and definitely warrants a visit. Unfortunately, when we visited it wasn't a sanctuary of peace and tranquility as there are extensive restoration works being out. It was sadly, very noisy but none of this detracts from the stunning beauty of the interior decoration, which must be seen to be believed. There is much to see, but again, during our visit some parts of the church were inaccessible due to works. Do make the short ascent up to the gallery for incredible elevated views of the nave, East End and upper decoration! This church will not fail to impress!

“Just spectacular and worth the wait!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

Of course, travelling over Easter and wanting to visit churches do not always go hand in hand. Explanations of when it was open were not clear but we got there - and it was well worth the walk. There are few words that can do justice to the exterior and interior of this building - just go and see for yourself. I particularly loved the stained glass window of the deer (on the far left as you go in), information in the gallery area about the renovations and re-constructions and the architecture is just incredible.
