“Some unsympathetic changes”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2014

The castle hill site in Budapest is a main focal point for the city and contains and enormous Palace/Castle complex. There is really on the basement of the old castle remaining but a trip through this is well worth it. The rest of the complex is a large castle which on the outside is very impressive but has changed from its original form and its current incarnation appears to be more from the late 19th century. There are two excellent msueums - one a museum of Hungarian Art which offers an impressive collection but unfortunately the building has been gutted (perhaps from the war) and the interiors are actually fairly ugly. The other musem interiors are more intact and this is a history of Budapest Museum and the artifacts are splendid and the interiors more original. It is also located near the old town and can be accessed either by walking up the hill, bus or by a funicular or small train that takes you right up the hill to the castle entrance.

“Beautiful area”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2014

Castle hill on the Buda side of Budapest is a beautiful area. My husband and I went on our own here on the hop on hop off bus. Be aware that the last bus leaves at 5:00 p.m. There was so much to see here that we went back the following day and this time, we went there earlier. There are narrow winding streets lined with medieval buildings that are now souvenir shops.

On our second visit, my husband and I were going to see the interior of the castle but on the castle grounds, they had a wine tasting festival. We bought tickets for this and were pleasantly surprised at how delicious Hungarian red wines are. Their cabernets were full bodied with very smooth tannins. We could not finish all the booths as we were beginning to feel our wine. We wanted to buy a case of some of their wines but none of the wineries exported their red wines. The few that did export to the States only exported sweet white wines. So, we just bought 4 bottles and carried those in our luggage for the rest of the trip They also had some food stalls here and they sold Hungarian food. One was like a pizza only done Hungarian style. It was delicious.

I would recommend spending 1 full day here or 2 full days depending on how much exploration you want to do.

“Another Budapest Highlight”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2014

The whole Castle Hills area is a must see. We took the funicular up the first time...nice but expensive. The second time we took a walking tour with Absolute Walking Tours (free with the Budapest Card) and our guide, Brigit, was great. You'll see a few things you wouldn't have found without a guide.
This area includes the new palace, the ruins of the old castle, Fisherman's Bastion, Mathias Basillica, some upscale shopping, lovely homes, and a couple of good restaurants.
Getting there is UPHILL, but not too bad.

“A worthy walk”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2014

We always tend to walk up whatever happens to be steep near by... It's hard not to with its imposing view over the city. Take at least half a day to wander up on a clear day and get some if the best views of the city.

“Beautiful walks, romantic views!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2014

Walking through the gardens and the patios of the Castle, travels you back in time! Beautiful gardens and really great views to both sides of Budapest (both Buda and Pest sides)!

We also found an activity in one of the gardens, where you could take 5 shots with a weapon of your choice (bow, crossbow, spear)! Really unique!
