“Great location and friendly staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2012

I was only at the hotel for one night, but found it clean, had a nice bar and in a superb location. I felt very comfortable to walk around the area, shop and have dinner even though only speaking a few words of Hungarian.

The rooms are small compared to most in the US, but it is Europe and was very reasonably priced. I didn't get a chance to use the pool or sauna, but one problem I have is the location of the rooms compared to the other central areas of the hotel. This meaning the lobby and breakfast area was not so easy to locate with the different elevators and bridge ways. The rooms are actually across the street. The floor level numbering system sometimes became confusing trying to figure out how to get back to your room during breakfast. I ended up taking the stairs coming from my room to breakfast and walked into a back door into the restaurant kitchen. They were kind to show me how to get to breakfast. Breakfast was standard Europe fare, which I find not so great but that's just my opinion. Others seemed to enjoy.

I would recommend staying again, but probably not for an extended time due to the small room I had.

Location great - and breakfast was good. The air conditioning did not work and the hotel didn't seem to keen to do anything about it. The room was thus very hot and stuffy. Also looks in need of a bit of renovating!

An unpleasant evening in the bar when the bar manager would not serve our small group after hours but would serve the German guests (should add we were a small group of middle aged English people - not rowdy Football fans!) marred the trip a bit. The Hotel did offer us free drinks and apologised the next day but the experience left a bad taste in the mouth.

So - okay for a central hotel - but could be much better.

It was the perfect weekend! This large and modern hotel is located in the centre of the city with a metro station just outside. It is also convenient for the trams and public buses. The personal was very friendly and very helpful. The rooms were clean and quiet and there was a great variety at breakfast. The small sauna with the swimming pool was also a positive point. I would definitely recommend it. I will come back with more time to spend in this wonderful city.

Plus points first, the location, the breakfast and it is clean.

The down side, our room was very hot, the air conditioning wasn't working - when we raised the issue the only responce was that they could open the windows as the external ones are locked. Due to the 'design' once this is done there is a 3cm gap so don't expect a breeze. Opening them also meant a lot of noise as it's a city centre hotel so we had to close the internal ones to reduce it when we went to bed, however the noise from slamming doors and shouting etc in the corridors til the small hours then made sleeping challenging, so much for sound proof rooms.

The hotel boasts a swimming pool but when we tried to find the opening times information was sparce, it seemed to be open from 3pm some days and closed by 7pm others. The entrance looked distinctly unwelcome and getting too it required a sat nav and crystal ball!! Needless to say we didn't end up using it.

One bit of advice at breakfast is if you get coffee, guard it carefully as the staff seem to be on a mission to get the pots back.

Finally would I stay at the Korona again? Yes if they sort the aircon and take steps to stop the screaming & shouting. I will be contacting Mecure regarding the issues we encountered as it spoiled our weekend.

Dear altrincham15,
We would like to thank you for taking the time to share with us your comments following your stay at the Mercure Budapest Korona. Referring to the closed sound-proofed windows we would like to kindly inform you that the windows facing to the street are closed because of safity reason. We can advice you a courtyard room during your next stay with us. Regarding the air-conditiioning nevertheless due to some warmer days we have started the heating system. We hope to have a chance to better serve you in the near future.

This is a large, modern hotel in a very good central location, convenient for walking to most of central Pest and Buda and also very convenient for the trams and metro (easy to use & good value). Staff were unfailingly friendly, helpful & courteous. They were very encouraging about our hopeless attempt to learn a few Hungarian phrases! Our room was a reasonable size for the price, the beds were comfortable & the breakfast plentiful and good. The little swimming pool & sauna were a pleasant bonus. We would happily stay here again.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2012

We recently stayed at this hotel for 3 nights. On arrival the service at reception was excellent, but when we were shown to our room we were extremely surprised at how small it was and how tired everything appeared to be, particularly the bed. We asked to be moved to another room and were taken to a further two rooms that looked exactly the same as the first.

Eventually another room was found for us, which although very small had been refurbished at some point. The room was very clean, as was the bathroom and everything was in working order. However if one of us wanted to walk around the room, the other would have to lie on the bed, such was the lack of space, we even slept with the curtains open as closing them made the room oppressive.

The hotel is positioned in a good location, breakfast was excellent and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. we visited the swimming pool once, but found it to be extremely gloomy with very poor lighting, unlike the photograph on the website.

I would not recommend this hotel to anybody that I know and struggle to see how it can be rated as a 4 star hotel.
