“Breathtaking view of a magic city!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

I am not impressed easily, but I definitely put this hotel in my top 10 list, above all due to its breathtaking views on such landmarks as Buda hills and chain bridge, and easy access to the above mentioned landmarks. Then, the rooms are spacious and with large floor to ceiling window to be bathed by this absolutely beautiful panorama ... Then the breakfast is excellent and well stocked and the area has a natural charm. Staff is very friendly and swift to requests.
The facade of the hotel is not to par with the surroundings but is that important ? A small drawback may be the gym club which is small and may get crowded .

Room Tip: Get a higher floor room with the Danube view.

Try to get a room with a Danube view (that's about half of the hotels rooms!). They charge a premium for them (surprise surprise), but the pay off is stunning views of the Royal Palace, Chain Bridge, Mathias Church and Fishermans Bastion across the Danube. The views are particularly fantastic at night, when the monuments are floodlit.

Now to the hotel itself. Check in was a bit shambolic, but check out was a swift and pleasant experience.

The staff in all departments were, without fail, very attentive and efficient.

The bedroom and bathroom were spotlessly clean and well furnished and equipped, though there was a lack of drawer space.

Our room had a very comfortable bed and a very efficient shower. I'm not a great fan of aircon units that also blow hot air for heating as it's often a bit of a struggle to get the heat just the way you want it, but it worked reasonably well at this hotel.

The breakfast was superb, absolutely superb. I've only once before stayed at a hotel with better choice and quality.

We had Sunday Brunch at the hotel before catching our flight back and while it was pretty expensive, it was a great experience, with our champagne glasses constantly topped off and an enormous buffet selection of beautifully presented foods to choose from.......we didn't need any dinner that night!

The Intercontinental is ideally located not just for it's views, but also for it's proximity to dozens of restaurants in the city centre.

Overall this superb hotel helped make our break in Budapest a memorable (in a good way) experience.

Room Tip: Go for a Danube view room on the 5th floor or higher for the views and to eliminate any noise.

The current Mrs DorsetStu and I have just returned from a long weekend break at the Intercontinental Hotel, Budapest. The location as mentioned in previous reviews is superb and probably the best in Budapest for views especially if you request a river view room. We had paid a supplement for this and had a great room on the seventh floor, very comfortable bed, quality linen, bathrobes etc everything we needed and all spotlessly clean. The hotel had picked up on the fact that we were celebrating our 32nd wedding anniversary and even sent up a complimentary bottle of bubbly with a welcoming card from the hotel manager.

The hotel oozes quality with service from all the staff that is truly exemplary and very refreshing to experience. Nothing is too much trouble and we found that it was delivered in such a peaceful, calm and professional way, a huge credit to all who work there. The buffet breakfast is extensive and delicious with the dining area overlooking the river promenade. The lounge situated on the same elevation is a great place for enjoying a drink and a snack.

We had booked a transfer from the airport online with Airport Shuttle Minibus the morning of our departure at a cost of 4311.00 HUF and their desk was easy to locate in the terminal building. Very hassle free. The concierge booked our return taxi at a cost of 3950 HUF, so equally competitive.

We found Budapest very safe to walk around and a beautiful city despite its troubled history and the ravages caused during WWII and the 1956 uprising. We booked a 3 hour city tour through the concierge which took in the principle sites with a very knowledgeable tour guide called Helen who had boundless energy that belied her age of 72.

We visited the Terror House on Andrassy Ht and despite its harrowing message it somehow failed to fully deliver in a coherent way the horrors that must have been perpetrated there and whilst very sobering we came away somewhat disappointed that although well presented it hadn’t quite managed to do justice to the poor victims of the successive oppressive regimes.

A walk along the Danube took us to the Magnificent Parliament building and close by to the shoe memorial on the bank of the river. A city of startling contrasts.

On Saturday evening we attended a classical music concert held in St Stephen's Basilica given by the Duna String Orchestra. The acoustics and their performance were outstanding and left us both quite emotional. I believe this is an event that is often repeated and would thoroughly recommend.

We ate at NAD'OR Boutique Bistro on the approach to St Stephen's and again received superb service and quality food. Highly recommended.

We visited the Buda side on Sunday and ascended the hill up to the Royal Palace and Castle area via the Funicular and took in St Matthias Church which is undergoing partial restoration internally. We finished off with a hot mulled wine in turret café on the city walls on what was a bitterly cold day.

All in all we found Budapest and its people to be a delight and somewhere we would love to return to and without hesitation would again stay at the Intercontinental Hotel.

Room Tip: If you can try to stay in a river view room.

Loved the location & my room had an outstanding view over the river to the castle! Room & bath were nice; good amenities, comfortable bed, but nothing outstanding here except the view. Don't get me wrong - this is a very nice hotel, very clean, good WIFI, but really, it's a tad boring. There was nothing here outstanding except the location & the view - both of which make this hotel a good choice if you can get a decent rate or award stay. Hotel location makes for quick walks to all the tourist must see sights & the funnicular to the castle hill is just across the bridge-easy walk.

Room Tip: Definitely book a room with river view!

I am a Priority Club member and we stayed here for 4 nights using my points, so it was a freebie! Having read previous reviews I decided I would like a river view room so emailed the hotel in advance and paid the 25 Euro a night extra. Don't take it for granted they will have free rooms on arrival. I also emailed in advance and arranged for a trip to the Parliament it cost 6,500 HF each which was quite expensive but we had Elizabeth all to ourselves with a little guided mini tour en-route and she accompanied us all through our tour, I think we saved ourselves a lot of hassle.

The only thing to fault this hotel is the price of meals & drink. As we were on a room only basis it would have cost us 30 Euros per person for breakfast and a small beer was about £3 each. If you walk out of the hotel turn left along the river bank and when you get past the Marriott head inland by McDonald's you will find a pedestrian precinct full of cafes & restaurants. You can get a three course meal with a drink for about £10 each, do look at the 'meal deals' everyone seems to offer. We found a nice restaurant over the next part of the precinct called Europa with orange tables outside, very small but excellent food & staff.

Theres a Costa Coffee next to the Four Seasons just to the right of the hotel and a very big Costa Coffee up near St Stephens Cathedral.

We had intended to buy a three day transport ticket for the trams etc but the hotel is in such a good location everything is so close by and easy to walk to we ended up just buying a one day card.

We had several English speaking tv channels, CBS Drama & CBS Action as well as CNN & BBC news. Enough to watch at the end of the day.

If you end up with lots of small change hang on to it for the toilets.

Room Tip: Has to be a river view and it's well worth paying the extra

Right on the banks of the Danube a river view room is a must. Stunning views of the Chain Bridge and the hills of Buda. The hotel do go out of their way in terms of service , though I wasn't impressed with the decor and furnishing of the rooms. Very basic with a sense of tiredness. Drab. The location is picture perfect ......one great reason to stay here
