We two ladies of une certain age (grandmothers, to be precise!) stayed for two nights in the Hostel Marco Polo, Budapest on 14th and 15th May 2006 and found it very cheap, spotless, very safe, en suite and very helpful. Don't believe the 'free shuttle from Keleti railway station' - that's only if you wait an hour for a group to assemble. Pay the 1000 florints each (about £2.60) and go. The hostel wants cash up front and a 1000 florint key deposit, so you appear to be spending thousands in the first five minutes. In fact, it's incredibly good value. We had a room on the second floor with twin beds, en suite, lock-up wardrobe and lock on the door - we felt very safe. We found breakfast adequate for a youth hostel, with huge mugs of coffee - take it into the open courtyard. The courtyard is closed at 10 pm, and music is kept to the cellar bar, so neither bothered us. The hostel booked the marvellous Operetta ship attraction for us - 27 euro each in Budapest as opposed to 52 euro each on the website. Don't miss this - operetta, dancing, a marvellous Hungarian meal and floodlight river sightseeing for two hours. The hostel directed us to the Kek Rozsa resuarant up the street for lunch, very authentic and friendly. We also ate in the superb Italian restaurant next to the hostel itself - recommended as the best Italian restaurant in Budapest. Public transport was very convenient from near the hostel - tickets at the newsagents in the Metro station nearby, and the hostel organised the airport shuttle for us. Fascinating untouristy area still showing its Jewish roots, perfectly acceptable, friendly, very cheap, safe hostel.
