My mom, college-aged daughter , and I shared a room for four nights. They shared the double (two singles pushed together) and I took the fold-out couch which was surprisingly comfortable due to a firm matress. Big, supportive down pillows and fluffy duvets. Room was big enough for three adults and all bags. Bathroom was big with a walk in shower and heated floors. Kettle with instant coffee and tea was appreciated, especially after a cold walk.
The room was warmer than we prefer. We opened the window but heard too much noise from cars and motorcycles as well as from the Irish pub below, neither of which is the fault of the hotel. However, light sleepers who need fresh air be advised to bring earplugs. Room was quiet with the window closed. We heard no noise from other visitors.
Breakfast was plentiful but the Hungarian meats are quite salty and fatty (not just here). Good selection of fresh fruit and pastries in addition to eggs, scrambled and soft-boiled. There was yogurt, a selection of cheeses, tomatoes, bread and even champagne for mimosas. Pleasant servers kept the coffee flowing.
The desk staff were terrific. We were always greeted with a smile and genuine pleasantries as well as helpful advice and service. There is a slot on the counter in which to drop your magnetic key on your way out for the day. The staff had it in hand to pass back to us whenever we returned.
Location is superb for easy walking or cab access everywhere in addition to the metro stop. We walked to the Christmas markets at the Cathedral and Vorosmarty Sq., Vaci Utca, Parliament, Octagon, and over the Chain Bridge to/from the funicular. The spectacular opera house is adjacent (see a show in lieu of tour).
We ended up needing to visit the pharmacy twice during our stay. There is one just a couple of blocks away and even a 24/7 walk-up pharmacy near Octagon. The hotel staff gave us perfect directions to both.
Tipping must not be expected by the hotel cleaning staff. We left Forints conspicuously each morning but they were never taken. There is a safe in the closet big enough for a small laptop, passports, etc.
The hotel itself was clean and polished though understated. Furnishings valued function over form but everything was in good shape. Lounge was comfortable. Wi-fi was fast in lounge and rooms. Breakfast area was undergoing renovation so we were in a different room than what is pictured on K+K's site.
I would stay at the Budapest K+K Opera again and recommend it others who want good value, convenience, and a pleasant place to stay.
