which we booked for a return trip, airport - hotel - airport online. Slightly dearer than a normal taxi but as we arived at 9pm it saved any hassles queueing. Driver very friendly and on time for both trips.
Arrived at Hotel Budapest and met by very courteous and friendly staff. Checking in was only a matter of minutes and we received all city brochures from receptionist instead of the normal practice of going looking for them in the lobby. Were also given voucher for complimentary drink at the bar and a voucher for 25% off any dinner in the hotel restaurant.
The room was changed immediately for us as we did require smoking (I know, bad habit but I am trying to cut down)
Escorted upto the room and while many can say that this is just to receive a tip, it was not done in that manner. I have stayed in enough hotels to know when the staff are looking for money or providing a service as part of their duties.
The room was adequate, not too big, just the right size. We stayed in room 1208 which would give a great view but not of the city centre itself. The view was more of the suburbs but at this time of the year the fog was very heavy (not the hotels fault). If you want a view of the city centre ask for room 1201 or around that number.
Small wardrobe, comfortable bed, no problem with the shower - toilet facilitiesand spotlessly clean throughout. The room was cleaned every day.
I found the breakfast to be OK as I am not a big eater, The scrambled egg was delicious and I probably took more than I should have (sorry to the other guests!). The wife would have like a bigger choice but then again you cannot get a full Irish everywhere,
The hotel brochure stated that a Budapest tourist ticket was available for free travel for guests but at this time of the year was not available. The receptionist informed us that tickets were for sale at the shop but this opened at weird times, closed at 10:30 am and reopened at 5pm. We were informed where to buy tickets at the local Moskva Ter (not too sure about the spelling) Metro station and advised to purchase the 72 hour tickets for travel on Buses, Trams and the Metro. Receptionist also advised about money, pickpockets and to ask for a price from taxi drivers before getting into the taxi.
You can get a tram outside the hotel (on the other side of the road) for two stops and then the Metro for three stops into Deak Ferenc Ter, which is the main hub of the Metro where all three Metro lines meet.
As this review is only about the hotel I will only say that Budapest is a beautiful city and only for the rain which was to be expected we may have seen more sites on foot but the two hour English / German speaking tour was great and the courier had a great sense of humour.
The bar in the hotel is small with a smoking area, only bottled beer but has all other wines and spirits plus soft drinks, coffee etc.
Overall the staff were very friendly, comfortable hotel and not too far from the city centre and we woudlhave no hesitation in recommending this hotel.
The hotel itself was very clean, the lifts were a bit of a problem as they were working on them but that was no big deal, they have to be maintained sometime and this is not the busy season.
