“RIVER ISLAND THAT DANUBE TOUCHING”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013

BUDAPEST: MARGIT SIGET
RIVER ISLAND THAT DANUBE TOUCHING
By
Zoran Slavic

It is an incredible feeling current relaxation when you are in the green Margit Siget. In the middle of the Danube. Transfer from the incredible climax of Budapest, whereas if for a minute do not stop wailing siren ambulance and the police, are embedded in the overall noise of the big city, is fast and elegant. Buses, taxis, bike. Even the walks! Therefore, the shock of pleasure and beauty is so stunning and relaxing. So:
Margitsziget (Margaret Island) is a huge island between the two bridges: Margit-híd and Arpad-hid. Seemingly, it is nailed to the Hungarian capital, a few hundred meters away; this is an island where the city rests his soul. Halfway between Buda and Pest, Hungary largest island in the Danube, originally known as Rabbits Island, now popular as Margaret Siget centuries represented, first, religious rarity, then resort and spa, and today is all that and more tourist attraction, of course. This river island, in the urban environment, an unusual feature of this city. Margit siget has given Budapest, the Hungarian capital, another dimension to the city that has long takes up an important place in a great range of world capitals. Related to Budapest, in recent times, with Margaret and Arpad Hido, this island has been inhabited since Roman times when it was in the Middle Ages monks visited due to its isolation from everyday life, but also kings, due to the hunting.
It is called by the name of daughter of Hungarian King Bela (Adalbert) III, Margaret, who is the became a nun in the 13th century. In the 19th century, the island became a place available the ordinary people of this city. Suitable for couples. For Margit Siget I first heard it in the late sixties, the radio transmission water polo match our team against Hungary, taking place in one of his famous pools. Maybe that is the one that bears the name of Alfred Lajos, Olympic winner in the 100 and 120 m from 1896. Year.
Having learned about the fact that this place is in the middle of the Danube real small archipelago of island's eighteen, I could not decide what to admire more: the nature that created them, or entrepreneurial, persistent and pedantic Hungarians throughout the centuries and decades of adapting these islands new purpose. The one purpose, which has always been in collusion with what the man from the city, returns themselves, their bodies and their souls.
Thermal pools, walking trails, tennis courts, fishing, beaches, open theater, interesting bike trail, two large and representative hotel (old'' Grand Hotel'' Siget Margit, with marble bathrooms and rooms of incredible dimensions, and "Thermal Hotel") only part of the content that this Danube island has to offer the residents of Budapest and numerous tourists. Including the inescapable and cute Japanese. The Chinese, however, are not here today, foreign tourists! Many of them live in Budapest.
Of the neighboring islands, which are bound in the chain of recreation, entertainment and leisure, first mention Old Budim Island, Óbudai Sighet, which is the biggest rival Margit Sighet, mostly because of the fame that has seen in recent years: it has become known as '' Pepsi'' island. The name is derived from a weekly pop-music festival, which brings together the most famous pop groups in the world and over 300,000 visitors. Is not bad and remember the names of some other islands Danube between Pest and Buda, such as Haros, NEP, Molnar, Palotai, Szentendre, and Chapel. If nothing else, at least be surprised how many are refined and regulated by your drawing our previous in this area. “A peaceful retreat in the middle of the river”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

I didn't know what to expect from Margaret Island but it was worth taking a trip there on a sunny day. As part of our boat cruise we were able to take the boat there, take around for a few hours and then be guided back along the Danube at dusk. This is mainly a park but there are a couple of hotels with spa treatments if that's what you're looking for. The musical fountain comes alive every hour and there's a lovely garden to explore. Not many places to eat and drink so you may want to bring a small picnic with you. This is an island, mainly for young lovers to escape the city and indulge in romance! - this is also a working park, there are schools and houses but it is not densely populated. if you have spent too much time walking along Budapest's busy streets, then this is a welcome retreat for a few hours.

“Largest park - easy access”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2013

Spend a less than two hours walking from end to end incl a coffee break, or spend the entire day in this set of green lungs in the middle of the Danube. Tons of things to do. Another cheap thing to do in Budapest. In Pest, take tram 2 north until the last stop. From here, walk onto the bridge and furtheron to the island. Walk to the other end, and return by bridge to either Buda or Pest and commute back.
