“A great eye opener!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2013 via mobile

We saw this museum on Tripadvisor and thought we would take a look as we were stayibg in the Castle District. The tour was extremely informative and interesting. The guide spoke perfect English and was very knowledgeable. A highly recommended tour if you have a spare couple of hours!

“A must see in the Castle District”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2013

a 1 hour guided tour is fascinating and I was very surprised to see so many exhibits, hospital wards, operating theatre, many medical tools, together with the history of the facility and its many uses over the years.

Interesting. Good guide who spoke perfect English, was able to answer all questions asked and who was funny too. Nice and cool underground on a hot summer day.

“A really cool place to visit in Budapest!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2013 via mobile

While I was in the Budapest Castle, I encountered this place. This hospital in the rock is basically a set of natural caves that were expanded by man. It was used during World War II and continuously (in secrecy) up until the 60s.

Interestingly, this particular tourist attraction is quite different and unique than any other in the world. Not only was it a hospital hidden underneath Buda Castle but it was also a nuclear bunker and "top-secret" until the end of the Cold War.

One story I found interesting is that the keepers of the facility needed tons of diesel fuel to keep the place running in case of a nuclear attack. What they did was install a pipe outside above this hospital that ran along a bed of flowers. For 40 years, a "flowering truck" would come around and water the flowers and provide diesel fuel into the pipes. It is my understanding that nobody found out about this.

This place is certainly quite unique and worth a visit if you have the time. The tour is about 1 1/2 hours and you must follow a tour guide. It is quite comprehensive and leads you through a series of tunnels which displays several areas of the "hospital" and nuclear bunker. The tour guide explains how the work day and how it still operates with a unique air filtration system.

All in all, I was extremely impressed with this attraction and would recommend it to anyone who is in the medical field or interested in a very cool piece of history. If you work as a medical doctor, paramedic, police officer or in the medical field ask for a discount which is pretty substantial.

“so informative”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

definitely worth a visit, so much information about the recent history of budapest and the wax works give you a real feel for what it would have been like. tour was in hungarian and english though so felt slightly rushed. also you cannot take photos which was a shame
