“5 star with a proviso”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2013

The number of 5 star ratings must mean something. This is a querky, shabby-chic hotel, in a building that is part residential, on one side of a square containing a major museum. When you arrive you will wonder if your in the right place. There is no sign to suggest a hotel - an old building that has seen better days and just a small plaque alongside the door with instructions to use the key-pad for reception. Inside the wide spacious hall there are then 2 flights of shallow stairs (76 in all)up to the entrance. A small reception area surrounded by 5 interconnecting rooms of public space where you have breakfast (currently 8 Euros and great value) or can sit in the evening and sign for drinks from the honesty bar. There is always tea available through the day and often coffee.
The rooms are spread about the building - a number you go back downstairs, through the hall, across a central courtyard and up more stairs to another keypad controlled door. Perhaps I made a mistake and booked a room with what was called a mezzanine - clearly the smallest room it tuns out and possibly smaller than the cabin on the boat we had just left, but we were already schooled in being tidy. It was a masterly use of space in buildings with very high ceilings - access to the bed being parallel box stairs hugging the wall in one corner, with shelving/ wardrobes built below. Cosy it was, but it suited us as we were out all day.
I would certainly use this hotel again, but go for a larger room. It is good value, the staff fantastic and it is central. The one proviso are the stairs - so anyone with difficulty getting about - this place is not for you;sorry

Room Tip: Not for those with mobility problems

We spent two nights at Brody House and we cannot rate it highly enough. If you like laid-back charm, quirkiness, an eclectic taste on art and don't mind lots of stairs..... this is the perfect place for you. All the staff were just delightful and so helpful about booking airport taxis, recommending places to eat or helping to pronounce the unpronounceable!
We stayed in the Tinea room and our teenage daughters in the Droga room. The rooms were spotless, charming and quiet and the beds wonderfully comfortable. Breakfast was served in the club rooms in front of a huge window. There was some fab coffee and a wide selection of yoghurts, fresh fruit, croissants, cheese and salami. In the evening, candles and music and an honesty bar set the scene for a relaxing drink or two.
There is heaps to do and see in Budapest. We walked miles. I would recommend a visit to the Holocaust museum; extremely moving and paints a tragically sad side to Budapest's topsy turvey history. An afternoon in the spa baths - the ones beginning with an S and something completely unpronounceable - is an absolute must, although it takes a minute or two to adapt to sitting in warm baths in close proximity to hundreds of complete strangers! But, when in Hungary...!
Eating out was a really positive experience. The food was tasty, with a wide selection, even for vegetarians and the wine was delicious. How nice to be paying £2-£3 for a glass of decent Hungarian wine, rather than being ripped off as in so many European capitals.
In short, we loved Budapest and especially Brody House. What a difference from bland, chain hotels!

Room Tip: Ask for Tinea (gold bath!) or Droga (great shower!)

We found the hotel first and for good measure it was in Budapest.
Neither disappointed.Fabulous fabulous on every level.....Budapest was pretty good too.
Thankyou to Klaudia and Szilvi who looked us so well from the booking process to the taxis and even the best take-aways.A credit to the hotel and their families.

This was the nicest B&B I have ever been to. It is very old, modern (all in one) and is furnished in a very cosy way. It looked rather like an "atelier" of a very successful artist! :) It is a very old building without elevator and actually it doesn't look like a hotel at all! It is very clean and every room has its name and its own style! In our room there was a huge bathtub which I used twice during my 3 nights stay! The room was huge and very clean. The bed was so comfortable. The only inconvenience was that you could hear noises from the old ducted system but...well...it is old. The area where the breakfast is served, their "living room" is so warm and charming. They have a bar where you can mix your own drinks and nothing's is missing there. You just have to write down what you had! It is a feeling like home while you are sitting in the "living room" next to the fireplace sipping on your drink and listening to very cool music! The staff was exceptionally nice! The girl (i don't remember her name) was very helpful and always smiling (honestly) She would have done everything to make your stay as pleasant as it could be! Breakfast was excellent too! Nothing was missing! Actually the B&B was one of the best experiences I made in Budapest!

Brody House is a great boutique hotel in a good location. The staff were really helpful - Vivian greeted us on arrival and recommended great restaurants and Klaudia also recommended a great restaurant and nothing was too much trouble. The rooms are beautiful and very different with a very comfortable bed. Loved the breakfast and the lounge area is great for relaxing in and having a drink with friends. Budapest is a beautiful city and we recommend it for a short break.

Chic, warm, stunning. We stayed in the Bullet room for two nights and were amazed at the quirky details everywhere you look - the colourful artwork, ginormous bath, the marble, lighting, the graffiti toilet room where you can leave your own sketch or message, the bright open lounge with grand piano, wood burners, bay windows. A real gem, hidden up a side street right in the centre. Ideal for visiting Castle Hill, the Danube and it's bridges, thermal baths and spas (definitely try 2 or 3 of these, a real experience!), the Parliament Building, St Stephens basilica, shops, restaurants, Hero Square etc. Tasty buffet breakfast for 8 euro, hot extras around 2 euro each, eggs Benedict etc. Fresh and varied. Charming, beautiful, not pretentious and very welcoming. A real treat! Superb customer service from reception. Peaceful. Interesting when you arrive finding your way up the dark and imposing staircase and entrance hall (it is located in a residential building opposite a park and museum) Taxi from airport around 20 euros. Highly recommend using the hotel to book your restaurants from their recommended list - Madame Noi was excellent for Vietnamese/ Chinese fusion at around 50 euro for two for starter, big main, glass of wine; Borsso was excellent for traditional Hungarian, warm and friendly, casual posh setting, hidden away and really tasty unusual food as well as choices for the less adventurous! In short, a charming and unique base for a fun mini break.
