“Avoid!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

I went Budapest recently with a group of friends and thought this was a nice way to see the city and it was also a good price which included a boat ride. However, from the start we only had problems with this tour.

On the first day we got the yellow bus which was a pretty small vehicle but before boarding we asked if there was spaces for us all and they said yes. Once inside the vehicle we noticed there no available seats and were left to stand until people got off on the next stop. When we eventually managed to get a seat each we all got wet from the water which was leaking from the roof.

Another problem with this tour was the lack of buses which ran throughout the day which meant if you finished early there was quite a bit of hanging around until the next bus came and thats if you were lucky to get a seat. Buses were very delayed and one of them did not even showing up after having to wait in the rain.

As for the boat ride we never managed to have this. The first day we got there for the boat ride we noticed the boat was not there for its 7pm departure. We then attempted the tour the next day at 5pm as shown on the leaflet which we got from one of the Hop on Hop off stands and told by staff members that very morning would be running but were told upon arrival that there was actually no 5pm departure. We were told that they should have updated the new leaflets which showed there would only be a boat ride available at 7pm. We were not the only ones waiting as there was roughly about 20 people behind us who also happened to have the old leaflets.

Overall i found the service to be very poor and would have been better off seeing the city by travelling on the metro as we only used this bus tour for 3 stops. It was a total waste of money and would not recommend this.

“Hop on hop off bus, Budapest”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

My daughters and I did this on a short trip to Budapest, it was a great way of getting about and seeing everything that this beautiful city has to offer, we thoroughly enjoyed it. We got off at the top of a hill and walked down to the river and found a spa where we spent a few lazy hours in the pools.
We loved Budapest and would go again.

“Not the best!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2013

My husband and I had a short city break in Budapest and our hotel advised that this was the best way to see around all the sights. Unfortunately when we were there, there was a National Holiday but the bus company did honour a 3 day ticket instead of a 2 day ticket. The buses run every 30 minutes until lunchtime and then every hour until about 5pm. I am sure that these are just winter hours but there was certainly insufficient buses running for the number of passengers wanting to utilise them. We were often left standing at a stop waiting on another bus as the scheduled bus was full. This wait could be anything from 20 to 50 minutes. The buses certainly do not run to timetable. If they are running too late, they miss out stops to try and get back on track and in reverse if they are early they sit on a street for anything up to 30 minutes. When we were there, there was quite a bit of snow fall and sleet and they put on open topped buses! On a positive note, the bus took us to all the important venues in central Budapest and maybe in better weather it would have been more enjoyable rather than trying to keep your hat on in the open topped bus! The ticket also allows you a cruise on the Danube. It advertised that there were 3 stops on the cruise but I am afraid to say they didn't stop at any for us! Not a great tour - sorry!

“Chaos!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013 via mobile

We chose to use the Giraffe Hop on Hop off Buses during a short city break to Budapest because they were the lowest price tour that we had seen. However, you seem to get what you pay for! Some of the guides on the buses appeared disinterested in their job and were not always helpful or able to reply to queries on the bus timetable (in fairness there were a few guides who were pleasant and able to help). A national holiday fell during our stay and we were unable to get clear information on when buses would be running (although we were given two extra days on our bus ticket due to the disruption). However when the buses did run they were overcrowded and we were often left waiting at bus stops for "another service" because the buses were full - standing around waiting for a bus on a freezing March day is not fun! It also felt a bit like we were back at school with people pushing and shoving to get on the buses when they appeared. The buses themselves appear to have seen better days although they did get you from A to B. Some of the other tour companies (the green and blue buses in particular) had a more modern fleet and really all the bus operators provided a like for like service. I think the biggest disappointment was the lack of a personal touch to the tour - you simply listen to a pre-recorded audio tour which was, at points, repetitive. Also be warned the the tours start relatively late in the morning and we often found ourselves rushing around to get the last bus back towards our hotel. If the weather had been better, we would probably have just walked to most sites. We did make use of the night time boat tour offered with our bus ticket - but again it was a pre-recorded audio tour with no "human" element or opportunity for interaction with a guide.

Have been on better tours elsewhere.

“Value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2013

A nice way to see the major sights in Budapest in 48 hours. Good value for more for a two day ticket plus a trip on the Danube. Would recommend.
