Budapest is rapidly gaining its share of first-rate restaurants, most of which are rather sleek and -- dare I say it -- reminiscent of establishment more likely found in Prague or Vienna? They are good, but there is a certain sameness about them, and after a few ventures, one is unsure of just "where you are dining." But Budapest is more than this; despite its troubled political history, it has a long tradition of fine restaurants that are definitely Hungarian in ambiance, offer excellent service and menus that sport traditional Hungarian as well as adventurous European cuisine. Museum is the epitome of these rare places in Budapest. As its name implies, it is centrally located, adjacent to the fine arts museum -- and has been for over 150 years. On a recent weekend evening, hosting two guests who were on their first visit to the city [we were all from the US on business], I chose this fine establishment for a "traditional" urban Budapest evening. As always, it was on beam in every way: lovely surroundings, well-laid table, a varied menu and an excellent wine list, Best of all was the truly professional and genial wait and support staff. One of us had the recommended fish dish, one a traditional pork preparation, and the third among us had the recommended lamb. We each had either a starter or a salad. It was all beautifully prepared and presented, and the recommended wine was -- surprise! - the lesser-expensive house red from a winery less than 50 miles SE of the city. The tab for this mellow evening was almost embarrassingly modest - less than US$150 for the three of us, including service. The only occasional down side was the pianist, who was accomplished with the American songbook, but at times was slightly carried away in the volume department. Try if you wish some of the more zippy au courant places in Budapest but by all means, for a literal and figurative taste of the elegance of the Budapest restaurant and dining tradition, make a reservation at the Museum and have a great evening! Such a fine experience!
