“Perfect for us”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

I discovered the Gerloczy in Rick Steves' guide book on Central Europe, and my husband and I affirm what Rick said and what other Trip Advisors have reported. The Gerloczy is an affordable gem in the downtown area of Budapest - well located for access to the Danube and transit, and within walking distance of many sights. We stayed 8 nights in total in October this year (2013); while we went on an overnight trip to Eger, the Gerloczy stored our luggage, and had it waiting for us in our new room on our return. Our rooms were Room 4 on the 3rd and 1st floors, one with a red and the other with a gray colour scheme which added visual interest. Although I was a little worried that there would be some noise drifting upstairs from the restaurant when we were on the 1st floor, it wasn't a problem at all. We enjoyed the turn of the 20th century decor, and especially appreciated the small size of this hotel which provided a sense of intimacy. We are especially grateful for the excellent service from reception; for two travellers with no knowledge of Hungarian, their assistance was crucial in orienting us and helping us with our arrangements. We enjoyed the other guests attracted to the Gerloczy whom we met over breakfast in the Gerloczy cafe downstairs - which is also a delightful cafe for a coffee and delicious dessert. Yes, the bathroom was small by North American standards; it worked for us. As I found Budapest somewhat intimidating, I welcomed the comfort of Gerloczy for the first couple of days till we found our way around. We would return in a nano-second, and recommend this hotel to other travellers who have a penchant for charm and great service.

Room Tip: (You may wish to ask for a room with a stall shower vs. a tub with hand held shower.)

This is a small 15 room colorful hotel, well situated in Budapest. not far from the Danube and near the Old Jewsih Quarter. Also near very convenient transportation. Although it is above a well known coffee house, the rooms were quiet and did not hear any noise from the cafe, Each floor has a different color scheme. The rooms color scheme is in line with that of the floor. The decor of the rooms were similar, but not the same as each other. Also they were in keeping with the period. The staff was very attentive and accommodating and spoke and understood English fairly well.

What a delightful place to stay - style, charm, great service, convenient location, comfort, superb value for money and above all an atmosphere of convivial good humour. Lots of lovely touches: the homemade biscuits and cheese straws in the minibar, the Valrhona chocolate on the pillow, the beautiful light switches.... And you get to have breakfast in one of the best cafes in Budapest, one of the best cafe cities in the world.

Stayed 4 nites in early October, in room 15, overlooking side street. Hotel situated in a charming little square in a good quiet location, a few blocks from Danube and walking distance to major sites. Staff very friendly. Room and bath size avg for European stds; very clean! Mini-bar is free and replineshed daily (great value). Restaurant is part of hotel - we ate dinner twice there; good food, rasonable prices (you'l have breakfast there). Good wifi signals.
overall, great experience.

My husband and I stayed at the Gerloczy Rooms for 3 nights in September. The room was clean and spacious. The breakfast at Gerloczy Cafe was the best of our three week stay in Europe! The location is central to everything. I highly recommend this hotel!

We absolutely loved this little hotel! Its a cozy little haven in a busy city and I would strongly recommend it to all travellers but particulary couples. The treats in the mini fridge are a nice touch(I drank the champagne in bed!) and we devoured those little cookies immediately each day.

The hotel does require that you spend at least 12 Euro/person at breakfast which is a little bit of a stretch as we felt like we were stuffing ourselves in order to use up 12 Euro (you are charged a minimum of 12Euro/person regardless of whether you consume that amount or not). In my opinion it would be more realistic to have it be 8-10Euro.

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed this little taste of luxury while on our trip!

Here is what you get at Gerloczy: a small but quiet and beautifully decorate room, great pastries and coffee to start the day, and helpful staff to help plan the day. In addition, the location is perfect for those who want to explore the city by foot and/or public transit.
