“Sad Reminder of the Past”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2014

If you walk along the river on the Pest side, you can't help but see the many pairs of bronze shoes scattered along the bulkhead. There is a small plaque describing the reason for the shoes being there. Take a moment to reflect on the unfortunate men, women, and children who were pushed into the Danube.

“Sobering”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2014

I am not sure that "attraction" is the correct description for this very special place in Budapest.

Some have made note of the fact there is very little information located at the site and as such they provided lower ratings. Personally I think this is one of the more sobering and touching memorials to the history of the Jewish population in Eastern Europe that I have seen. The beauty of the memorial is its simplicity and when you stand there, looking over the beauty of the Danube and the city beyond, and see those shoes, it makes you stop and quietly think about what those people endured and what ultimately happened to them.

Hopefully the memorial serves as never ending call to not forget what happened here.

“Very poignant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2014

Brilliantly done and very moving. Not far from the parliament so if you are there just cross the (busy) road. As you look at Parliament from the Buda side it is to the right.

“Very moving and makes you think”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2014

The memorial is very touching, the problem is the vage explanation of what this is actually... The written sign beside the memorial, is very short and talks in General, without explaining that this is for the 150,000 jews that were murdered by the nazies armi

“Wow”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2014 via mobile

As other reviewers have pointed out, it could use some interpretation and better access, a good cleaning, and perhaps a way to route the bike path around the reflection area. Nevertheless, its important to pause here, consider the universality of the poignant shoes, and consider how we treat those around us.
