“Well what a surprise....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2011

....And what a surprise it was. My partner rang me one Saturday morning to ask 'how do you and the kids fancy going to Hungary on holiday' hmmmm was my reaction but i trust him and his judgement so said yes sounds great.
Flew into Budapest airport and picked up our rented car and set off for Balatonfured. From the moment we arrived we were all amazed. The temperature was a hot 36 degrees and the sun was shining. Hence to say the cases were just dumped and we headed off to the lake.
We stayed in a mobile home which was basic but hey all we did was eat, sleep and shower there (the only thing missing for me was aircon)
We spent almost everyday of our 10 day holiday in the lake, either using the slides,(which give super wedgies by the way) or playing on inflatables and 2 of the days we hired a pedalo with a slide, the kids thought it was great. There is an onsite open air pool which we did look at and it was spotless but for us the lake was better. We did go to the water park just over the road for a day which was brilliant, residents of the site also got 50% off ticket prices which made it even better.
The site itself has plenty of everything for everybody. Lots of bars, restaurants and a games room for the kids. Also to hire was bikes and go-karts all very reasonably priced too.
a couple of evenings we went into the centre of Balatonfured which was gorgeous, the harbour was stunning. We caught the last 2 nites of a local wine festival which had rows of wooden huts selling all kinds of local wines, it was at this point my partner and me said we 'need to come back here without the kids' lol. We also visited Tihany just up the road which is a quaint little village selling lace and pottery. It also has a gorgeous church with a cafe at the top of the hill with the most breath taking views of the lake. Eating out is reasonable too with 5 of us having an evening meal with drinks for £35-£45.
Slushes about £1 with ice-creams starting at just 50p a scoop. We had very happy children. There is also a Tesco supermarket just over the road.
Which leaves me left to say that if you want a family holiday or a couples holiday i couldnt recommend Balatonfured enough, have to say its in my top 3 holidays and we will deffo be going back.....

stayed here for ten nights during summer holiday in hungary. the site is situated on the edge of town across from the water park and opens onto lake balaton
as well as tents there are cabins and mobile homes for hire some looking onto the lake. its a huge camp and has a beach area for children, a water slide and at the far end an open air swimming pool which is spotless.
there are restaurants bars and shops dotted around the site. also play areas for the kids. they can also hire go karts and bikes for the day.
there is a water ski-ing set up with overhead wires on the lake which looks terrifying!
we never made it to the water park or the ferry across to siofk which probably says a lot for whats going on at the site. balaton fured is quite chic without being too full of itself (great chinese take away) and worth visiting
you can follow a cycle path from the site across the town following the promenade. we just missed a wine festival which was unfortunate. a mile or two up the road we had a ride in an old soviet tank and in thiony there is a great coffee shop with a breathtaking view of the lake. also met lubo moravciks uncle in the church grounds which was a big bonus for a celtic fan! at the ferry terminal there is a beach and cafe whichs serves great homemade food.
the only downside (and some may see it as a blessing) is that there are few english speakers on the site. the site caters for largely dutch german and of course hungarian holiday makers. found everyone very friendly and (aside from watching a pick pocket weighing up his quarry at the bus station) welcoming
