“Rainy weekend in Ljubljana”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2012

We made last minute lodging arrangements for a weekend trip to the city and were stuck spending a little more than we were hoping to spend on a hotel.

Upon arrival, the hotel lobby, hallways, rooms, and bathrooms were all modern and clean. The only downsides were the creaky wooden floorboards and fluctuating water temperature in the room. Both were very minor issues though.

Random thoughts: The staff was friendly and helpful...breakfast was full of choices in a spacious dining room...smaller fitness center than i was expecting, but met my needs...the hotel charges €18 per day for parking (i'm sure it's negotiable, but since it was the weekend, we found free parking just a 3 minute walk away).

Room Tip: As mentioned earlier, the wooden floorboards were slighly creaky. Showers had good water pressure, b...

Dear valuable guest,
thank you very much for your positive review about your stay with us. This is our greates reward to our work. We will check the water fluctuation in your room as stated in your rewiev but i am affraid there is not much to be done about creaky floors. they are made of ancient wood therefore they can make some small sound once in a while in some rooms, but i can assure you that this is not an issue for our guests.
I am so sorry to hear that you had a rainy weekend in Ljubljana, in fact the whole April / May were unusually wet here.....therefore i would like to invite you to visit this lovely city once again in summer or early autumn when the weather is predicted to be more stable / dry. If the weather is warm and dry, Ljubljana becomes very lively with all street caffees, very interesting sightseeing and beautiful parks.

best regards,

Gregor Jamnik, general manager

Recently completed a two night stay in Hotel Slon in quaint Ljubljana. The room itself was very nice, had a superior king, street view, nice wooden floors, good a/c, tv, bath, etc. The breakfasts were great, nice selection of coffee and other beverages and great cheeses, breads and assorted other goodies. The location is excellent, just up the street from the main square. ljubljana is a fairly small town so everything is pretty close. I did think it was a bit pricey at first, but it dropped under $200 a night US so i took it. Not sure it makes sense much higher than that but ljubljana is surprisingly expensive but has wonderful food. Also, the elevators, of which there are two, are painfully small which makes checking out painful. The place needs bigger elevators, period.

Room Tip: Due to the small and poor running elevators, I'd choose a lower floor. There is not much street...

Dear valuable guest,

thank you very much for your feedback regading your stay with us. I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us. Positive feedback is most rewarding to me and my team as this means that our efforts to make you feel comfortable were successful. I am deeply sorry to hear that small elevators disappointed you. they are quite small indeed, but there is nothing we could possibly do about it since the hotel operates in a historical building dated back in 1936. They can accommodate 5 to 6 persons and it is large enough to accept a wheelchair. I can assure you that elevators of our size can still offer normal operation of a four star hotel.

Hope to welcome you back in our hotel, soon.

Warm regards,

Gregor Jamnik, general manager

The hotel is a relatively modern interior, all clean and in good condition. Staff were friendly and always helpful.
In particular I needed taxi's arranged and the hotel helped organise these as and when required without issue and placing directly on my bill. Prices of taxi's off the street were far higher than the well organised and prompt service organised by the hotel.

My room was spacious, very tidy and clean and the room safe was larger than most, allowing me to keep my laptop in it. While I didn't see any crime in Ljubljana, it's comforting to know that your items are valuable safe in your room.

I didn't stay in the hotel to eat much but the bar was well stocked and bar staff were helpful, polite and attentive.

Prices normally in the hotel are quite high, although reasonable with the level of care you receive from this hotel. Business travellers should be able to get a decent room rate, as my company had arranged and it worked out not much more than a UK 2-3 star hotel.

After recently staying in a 5 star hotel, which was a little too much old world, this hotel well deserves it's 4 star status.

Room Tip: Try for the 6th floor for the views.

I stayed 4 nights on B&B basis. I'd booked directly with the hotel & they also arranged a shared minibus transfer from the airport (9€) ... a bit of a wait while the minibus filled up with passengers, but the journey only takes around 30 mins.
On arrival, the requested quiet room had not been allocated but Reception swiftly rectified this error. I was given a top floor room, with an unattractive near view looking on to the roof of the adjacent building & looking down on to the hotel's delivery yard. However this was compensated for by the view of the castle on the hill & the distant mountains!
Location ... excellent, 2 mins' walk to the triple bridge & 5 mins to the funicular serving the castle. There are loads of restaurants situated along both narrow cobbled riversides. And 5 mins walk the other way is gorgeous Tivoli park & forest. The bus & train stations are 10 mins' walk.
My room was comfortable & well equipped, but (as mentioned by another reviewer) the safe is on the cupboard floor & requires a torch ... not to mention a degree of flexibility ... in order to operate it!!
Bathroom ... lovely thick fluffy towels, proper hairdryer (not one of those ones with a hoover hose!), good water pressure, but little annoyances like wall hooks situated above the loo (!) rather than on the back of the door! And beware the dangerously hot water!
The bed was beautifully comfortable with a mattress topper, & choice of pillow types. The presence of earplugs by the bed didn't bode well though! The first morning I was woken around 5.30 by workmen on the aforementioned adjacent rooftop! And the church bells start at 6am!!!! Also the hum of the aircon (efficient) may disturb some people. The soundproofing is inadequate, as are the curtains re- lightproofing.
Nice flat screen TV but only BBC World & CNN in English.
Buffet breakfast ... plenty of choice, both hot & cold. But why oh why can't they provide a pot of coffee, rather than have to keep getting up for a refill from the furthest corner of the room!! A reasonable choice of fresh fruit but no freshly-squeezed juice.
Ljubljana old town is easy to explore on foot ... but beware of the numerous cyclists, especially in the narrow streets! The castle is very interesting & views therefrom are wonderful. I took a half day excursion to Postojna caves & Predjama castle ... well worth the trip. Bled is 75 mins away by bus.

In summary ... a very good, well-situated hotel. No crimes, just a few misdemeanors!

Dear valuable guest,

thank you very much for you kind and very detailed feedback about your stay. We will use this valuable information to correct all possible deficiencies you are mentioning. Of course some cannot be corrected, for example we cannot replace the bathroom hook to the back of the door since the door is a glass door and no hooks could be mounted there. Noise with a window closed should not be an issue in our hotel, but we will check your room once again. Specially rooms facing the courtyard should be more quiet. Regarding our TV selection we would like to inform you that there are many more English speaking channels available, some are free, some are found in our premium selection for only 1,49 eur per 24 hours. Thank you for you positive feedback about our breakfast and yes, freshly squeezed orange juice can always be ordered by request, free of charge. The juice offered from the drink bar is 100% pure orange juice, mixed with freshly squeezed juice, half by half, but our staff is more than happy to offer you pure freshly squezeed one, by request. Our policy is to offer our guests freshly brewed illy espresso coffee, therefore coffee pots with filtered coffee on every table is not offered. Again, if a guest requests such service, we are happy to fulfill such wishes.
Dear guest, I am very happy that you graded our hotel with satistaction with only minor deficiencies and hope to host you again in our hotel in the near future.

At the Slon, which is Slovenian for elephant, you are greeted in your room by a plush one. The design and atmosphere of this hotel is intended for a high level of comfort and service, both of which had pleased me. I stayed for 3 nights, the first night in a double room on the main street on the second (European) floor and shifted to a single room on the sixth floor for the next two nights. The rooms were very comfortable and conducive to working, while the buffet breakfast was the most sumptuous that I have had in a hotel in Europe and the U.S., ever, and I've traveled a lot. The service was friendly, efficient, and professional. The location is convenient--my work took me a 20-minute walk away from the city center, and the ultra-convenient bicycle rental system (http://en.bicikelj.si/) had several stations nearby. There was no shortage of dinner options in the surroundings.

However, the catch to all of this comfort and convenience was the noise. On the second floor, the noise from the street traffic was very audible; earplugs were kindly provided, but I'm not accustomed to sleeping with such things in my ears. The room on the sixth floor was above the pedestrian zone, but there was a disco blaring just outside the second night in that room. I think the dynamic Ljubljana nightlife is a general problem for any of the many hotels in the center of the city, so the only alternative would be a location slightly further away. This is a beautiful city, and I happily return for every opportunity.

Room Tip: Street side may have road traffic, but that is preferable to the disco on the pedestrian zone side!
