Touring Italy and Slovenia, we spent three nights at the Penzion Mayer in July. Having failed to get a room at the Penzion Berc (apparently they get booked up months in advance), we were lucky to find space at the Mayer. All they had left, they told us apologetically, was a small apartment, which we eagerly accepted (and that was six weeks before we went). The apartment turned out to be a complete two storey house with its own kitchen, dining room and beds for five, in the garden of the hotel proper. Our bedroom had a lovely balcony with window boxes. It was great, and at only €70 a night, an absolute steal (it would be more for more people, obviously). The hotel breakfast was extremely good, with lots of fresh fruit and delicious free range boiled eggs. Though the Mayer has an apparently well respected restaurant, the menu did not appeal to us for lunch or dinner and we chose to sample some of the many other excellent restaurants in Bled. There were a number of English guests who had booked half board through companies like Thompson and who did not have that option, as a previous reviewer has noted with disapproval.
Cycling round the lake on the bikes that guests can use for free is easy and a lovely experience, as is swimming in the lake. Another good cycle ride is up to the Vintgar Gorge. Try to be in Bled on the third Saturday in July, as we were, when the lake is transformed into a magical twinkling fairyland as thousands of candles are floated on the water under the floodlit castle before a fantastic firework display. We found the ideal place to watch from in the Panorama restaurant (book a table close to the lake in advance), which has a wonderfully lively atmosphere with singing and dancing and is five minutes walk from the Mayer. The only slight drawback was that temperatures were much hotter than usual when we were there and there was no air conditioning, but frequent cold showers and dips in the lake cooled us down. Most of the time air con would not be necessary in Bled. All in all it is very good place to stay and good value for money (though possibly not as a half board package through an agent). We would warmly recommend the Penzion Mayer and would certainly stay there again.
