“Our own little gingerbead house”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2007

Touring Italy and Slovenia, we spent three nights at the Penzion Mayer in July. Having failed to get a room at the Penzion Berc (apparently they get booked up months in advance), we were lucky to find space at the Mayer. All they had left, they told us apologetically, was a small apartment, which we eagerly accepted (and that was six weeks before we went). The apartment turned out to be a complete two storey house with its own kitchen, dining room and beds for five, in the garden of the hotel proper. Our bedroom had a lovely balcony with window boxes. It was great, and at only €70 a night, an absolute steal (it would be more for more people, obviously). The hotel breakfast was extremely good, with lots of fresh fruit and delicious free range boiled eggs. Though the Mayer has an apparently well respected restaurant, the menu did not appeal to us for lunch or dinner and we chose to sample some of the many other excellent restaurants in Bled. There were a number of English guests who had booked half board through companies like Thompson and who did not have that option, as a previous reviewer has noted with disapproval.

Cycling round the lake on the bikes that guests can use for free is easy and a lovely experience, as is swimming in the lake. Another good cycle ride is up to the Vintgar Gorge. Try to be in Bled on the third Saturday in July, as we were, when the lake is transformed into a magical twinkling fairyland as thousands of candles are floated on the water under the floodlit castle before a fantastic firework display. We found the ideal place to watch from in the Panorama restaurant (book a table close to the lake in advance), which has a wonderfully lively atmosphere with singing and dancing and is five minutes walk from the Mayer. The only slight drawback was that temperatures were much hotter than usual when we were there and there was no air conditioning, but frequent cold showers and dips in the lake cooled us down. Most of the time air con would not be necessary in Bled. All in all it is very good place to stay and good value for money (though possibly not as a half board package through an agent). We would warmly recommend the Penzion Mayer and would certainly stay there again.

My husband and I have just returned from a 2 week stay at the Penzion Mayer having booked this hotel on the basis that it was rated a 4 star Gold Award hotel by Thomson holidays.
However, although the hotel was very clean and the breakfast selection was excellent the evening meal was more fitting to 2 star status rather than 4 star.
On our first night we were rudely advised of what we would be eating and were not offered any choice(as was stated in the brochure). After complaining to the Thomson rep we were given a choice for all subsequent meals but the quality remained below the standard that we were expecting for the cost of the holiday. One meal consisted of 1/2 sausage each and 1/2 black pudding each with boiled potatoes!!! There was a wider choice of food on offer with the al a carte menu but we had already paid for 4star service when we booked the holiday.
In addition, towards the end of our stay the weather improved with temperatures of 35oc + but there was no air conditioning in the hotel at all and in consequence it was extremely uncomfortable at night, which necessitated leaving the balcony doors open and as our room was situated above the outdoor dining area it was also very noisy.
We were both very disappointed with our stay at the Penzion and would not consider returning in future.

Just to echo previous reviews - this is a most wonderful hotel. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the food absolutely excellent, and the staff friendly and efficient - nothing is too much trouble. Fantastic location within walking distance of all sights and amenities yet far enough away to enjoy the peace that Bled also affords. Still at very reasonable rates this hotel offers what is probably the best value for money the region has to offer. If you are travelling to Bled this hotel shouldn't be missed.

Just returned from a weeks stay at the Pension Mayer. This hotel is highly rated by both locals and guests with many returning on a regular basis. The Austrian style pension has a beautiful garden and a cosy family atmosphere. We were allocated a room on the first floor which was an average size overlooking the garden. The furniture was modern and contained minibar, complementary safety deposit box, telephone and television. There was no air conditioning. The cleanliness of the hotel was excellent throughout. Very good continental breakfast with a selection of cereals, fruits, bread, meats, egg and cake. We booked the holiday through Thomson lakes and mountains on a half board basis. The evening meal was a-la carte standard and was generally very good. However, there was a set menu for Thomson guests. Any variation to the set menu was not forthcoming by the waiters unless you specifically asked. If you book with a tour operator suggest you book on a bed and breakfast basis. Could either eat at the hotel (closed on Mondays) or choose from a good selection of restaurants nearby. The hotel has also one of the best wine sellers in Bled. There is currently a free wine tasting once a week for Thomson guests. I was very impressed with Lake Bled, fantastic scenery in an excellent location. Had a busy weeks stay, visited Lake Bohinj, Vintar Gorge, Ljubljana and Kranjska Gora by local transport. Also walked to Bled Castle (up a very steep hill) and travelled on a traditional rowing boat to the small island in the centre of the lake. If you are looking for a small family run hotel definitely consider the Pension Mayer. If you have any specific questions about the hotel, resort or places to visit happy to assist.

We stayed at Penzion Mayer last week for three nights. First, the lake and the surrounds are outstanding. If you like to hike, there are many nice walks around the area, the small towns not far off, and Mt. Triglavski. The Penzion was the great starting place.

About the hotel: this is not a 5 or 4 star hotel. Rather, it's a very nice 3 star. The room we had was plenty big enough (and I happen to like big rooms), with a seperate area for closets and dressing. The bathroom was clean. The balcony looked out to the lake and beyond to the Triglav's summit. Bled castle, the church and the island were all in view. The restaurant is very good; food and value. The service is excellent and the wine is nice, as well. The breakfast changed each morning and, quite frankly, I think it was the best breakfast we had this trip.

As far as recommending Penzion Mayer, I'd say go! I'd go back to this hotel again and i'd go back to Bled and Slovenia. I'm only back a few days, yet, i'm already missing the place.

Accomodation: Superb place. Regrettably we could only stay 1 night, and were lucky to get room 201 which was a triple room at the top of the building (and had a balcony). Clean, spacious and comfortable.

It is worth emphasising the restaurant is exquisite, with both an indoor and covered outdoor dining area.

Town: The location is the main thing, adjacent to a beautiful forest surrounded lake. We took the boat trip to the island - very tranquil and well-worth the 10 euro each. Row boats can be rented from Hotel Toplice for those who want to do their own thing.
