“Nice stay by the lake of Bled”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2013

The hotel is located by the lake, your 1st impression is the amazing view when you enter. It is declared as a 5 star hotel, I would rate it 4. The reason is that it is a bit outdated, needs to be renovated here and there. Nevertheless, rooms are spacy and comfortable. Lobby and meeting rooms are nice. Wellness is not too big, but it is OK. Their restaurant is called Panorama, is nice, good quality. All in all it is a good choice if you want to spend a few days by the lake of Bled.

Let's get this out of the way: There is only one clear reason to pay these prices to stay at the Grand Hotel Toplice -- the wonderful views of Lake Bled. If you took away those views, this hotel would not have much going for it. But is does have those views and respect must be paid.

First, the architecture is oddly laid out and not very attractive. The hotel is in serious need of a major makeover. The rooms have good bones -- high ceilings, wood floors, quality moldings, and, for those on the lake side, nice terraces. But everything is showing its Tito-era age. The wood is worn and creaky, the beds are antediluvian and uncomfortable, the curtains are tired and old-fashioned, and the terraces need some TLC (they have shabby furniture with coverings and ashtrays that would look like holdovers from the Communist era). With the exception of the bathrooms (dark but generally up-to-date), the rooms cry out "Renovate me!" Our room also featured two huge spiders. Everywhere you go in the hotel you see the need for a fresh coat of paint, a renovation here, a replacement there.

Service is hit-or-miss. Check-in went smoothly, and the guys at the front desk were generally knowledgeable. But the young woman at check-out was largely clueless, and focused on her telephone conversation rather than the guests standing in front of her. She was relieved when a man appeared at the other desk and he promptly checked us out. When I went back to ask her for a plastic bag, she did a perfunctory check in one or two cabinets and then with a shrug said she couldn't find any. Thanks for not really trying! This was Tito-era service at its best.

Much of this wouldn't matter much but for the fact that the Toplice charges top dollar in Bled. Even with our last-minute, late-arrival discount, the room was as expensive as our far-better hotels in Prague and Budapest.

But in some respects, if you have the money, the Toplice is still a decent choice in Bled, where high end hotels are not well-represented (the day an Iberostar or Starhotel opens in Bled is the day the Toplice goes out of business). The staff is generally pleasant and, as mentioned, whenever you get annoyed you can just look out from your balcony at the great views.

Room Tip: Stay here only if you get a lake view. The prices do not make sense without the view.

Dear guest,

May I first thank you for choosing our Grand Hotel Toplice for your stay in Lake Bled.
I am so pleased that you liked the views from the hotel which really are magnificent. Further, I am glad to read that you found out staff pleasant.

As our rooms are concerned, we deliberately renovated them in original shape as we respect long tradition of the hotel (two years ago we celebrated 80 years anniversary of the hotel in today's building). You could also notice pieces of old, original furniture exhibited in various parts of the hotel. Besides, whole building is protected and can only be renovated under supervision of authorities, responsible for cultural heritage. Anyway, the hotel's architecture and furnishing date from decades before World War II and are therefore older that Tito's era.

Dear guest, I wish to apologize as our receptionist hasn't offered you expected service; I have already talked to her about the issue therefore I believe that also this particular part of our services improves.

I hope that we will be able to welcome you again and remain
Sincerely yours,

SAVA HOTELS BLED

We enjoyed great service from all of the hotel staff during our three nights stay. The hotel is fairly well furnished with the combination of new and old. Breakfasts are very diverse and tasty. Wellness suite offers stupendous facilities for relaxing afternoon. In overall, best hotel in Bled.

My family – my husband and I, our two teenage children (16 & 17) and my parents - have just returned from 10 nights at the Grand Hotel Toplice and from the moment we set foot in the hotel, we knew it would be good. On our arrival and throughout our stay, the reception staff were all so incredibly friendly and extremely helpful. In fact, we have all agreed that it has actually been the best holiday we have all ever been on and that is a hard challenge when travelling with a range of ages; but the Grand Hotel Toplice more than lived up to its previous reviews, even though the temperatures were the highest ever on record in Lake Bled’s history.
We booked with Inghams, with Tina our rep meeting us at the airport in Ljubljana. She provided an excellent service throughout the holiday and it was a pleasure to meet her. Transfer to the hotel was very well organised, with the taxi driver providing lots of interesting information en route.
Having stayed in many 4 and 5* hotels before we did expect high standards from the Toplice, and it was gratifying that the hotel matched our expectations. For the staff, nothing was ever too much trouble and they all appeared to be very happy in their jobs. It was really lovely to be able to get to know some of them as individuals, not just staff who were there to provide a service.
The hotel was beautiful, with many rooms full of period features and furniture. We were allocated 3 rooms next to each other on the 4th floor, one of the rooms was a suite, which was fabulous. The rooms were all of a good size, had great air conditioning and stunning views from the balconies of Bled castle, the lake itself and the mountains beyond, an absolute must in a location as stunning as this. The beds were some of the comfiest I have ever slept in, with individual adjusters to allow for a softer or harder mattress. The rooms were all very well appointed, with tea and coffee making facilities, fridges, flat screen TV (which was never turned on during our stay) and hairdryers in the bathroom.
The food was very good, with a huge variety for breakfast, including many items such as eggs or waffles cooked to order. We were booked in on a half board basis and both breakfast and dinner were served in the Grand Restaurant. The setting for this restaurant was again beautiful, overlooking the lake and diners had the choice of sitting indoors or out. The staff here were so lovely and nothing was ever too much trouble.
Dinner consisted of four courses, firstly a self-service buffet table with specialities, then table service for a choice of three soups, five mains and four desserts. The food was all of a very high quality, with plenty of choices to suit most palettes.
My only gripe was the €7 charged in the restaurant for a litre of water, when the tap water was perfectly fine to drink; this is hotel policy apparently, but it did grate when two 0.5l beers ended up costing the same as a bottle of water!
My parents booked a day trip to Venice and as this meant a 07.00 departure and a 22.30 return, they missed both breakfast and dinner, but the hotel surpassed themselves by providing a huge packed breakfast for them and on their return they had set out a delicious platter in their bedroom.
Before dinner, we always ventured down to Bar Jerezo, within the hotel, where we were all greeted fondly by Dejan, who took the time and trouble to get to know us. It was an absolute pleasure to meet him. Message to other visitors: display some friendliness and common courtesy to the hotel staff and you will find that it is not only reciprocated, but your stay will be enhanced immeasurably (sadly too many visitors treat the staff as nothing more than serfs and seem unable to utter a simple please or thank you – it costs nothing, but does much to improve the experience!).
Every day we would take a rowing boat out around the lake and out to the island, where we could moor up. This was a very relaxing way to spend an hour (and if you kept to the hour there was no additional charge for hotel guests). We would then return and swim in the lake, which was extremely refreshing and nowhere near as cold as you might expect. Bikes were also available to hire from the hotel and a gentle ride around the 6km circumference of the lake was most enjoyable.
We did hire a car and travelled to a number of other locations, including: Vintgar Gorge (stunning walk), Venice (a long trip, but a city that is always worth a visit when holidaying in the vicinity), Piran (beautiful town on the Slovenian coast), Postojna caves (excellent trip with a fascinating tour deep underground) and Predjama castle, Radoviljica (lovely little old town), Klagenfurt (pretty Austrian town), Vogel Ski Centre (well worth a trip up on the cable car) and Lake Bohinj and Ljubljana (great place to visit). Most of these places are accessible on public transport, which is very efficient, or on organised trips from the local hotels. Also closer to home was the exhilarating toboggan ride, which was great fun, Bled castle and island, which were all worth visiting.
This hotel is possibly the most beautiful, friendly and most welcoming place we have ever stayed at, and considering we are usually a family seeking out new experiences rather than simply returning to favourite destinations, we all cannot wait to re-visit Lake Bled and the wonderful Grand Hotel Toplice. Thank you all so very much.

We read a lot of mixed reviews when looking for a place to stay at Lake Bled. We are so thankful that we chose this hotel. Our perfect stay began with the guys at the front desk - Jure, Gregor, Dejan, Dragan, and Miha. They were extremely accommodating, gave us a great room, and valuable information about places to visit in the area and good restaurants in town. We had a lakefront suite which was spectacular but we also looked at a couple of the standard lakeview rooms which, although smaller, were still very nice, all with air-conditioning. Breakfast at the hotel by the lakeside was one of the best we've had in Europe. The hotel's private beach is a huge plus - especially in high season. The free rowboat and/ or bicycle for an hour was also a nice amenity. Internet was available throughout the hotel and worked perfectly for us.
If you are picky enough, you can always find something to complain about - even in a 5 star hotel. But our experience at this hotel was the most memorable of our two month trip and we can't wait to return next summer.

Room Tip: Lake view rooms obviously the best choice.

A great old fashioned hotel full of modern conveniences. We were staying for a week so the upgrade to a Junior Suite was really necessary. The view from the bedrooms is absolutely stunning - the gloriously coloured lake with the castle to your right and the church on the little island in mid distance. My wife is an artist and spent happy ours drawing.
There is a good choice of restaurants in the hotel and a sensational Gourmet restaurant in the Park Hotel owned by the same group. The staff could not have been more helpful.
We were there in temperatures of 38 degrees so the cool spring fed internal pool was much appreciated.
One word of warning: the municipality run very noisy rock concerts in the open air quite close to the hotel.
A terrific place to stay for a week.

Was in northern Italy and wanted to visit Slovenia. Stayed for only one night and the Grand Hotel Toplice. Even though the weather was horrible with pouring rain, our lake front room was spectacular. The views of the castle and island was beautiful. Wish we could of taken the boats to the island but rain got in our way. The food was delicious as we ate breakfast and lunch at the hotel. Also definately visit the spa. I didn't get a treatment but loved the chilly mineral bath pool. Can't wait to return.

Room Tip: If you have the money, definately get a lake front room as it's worth it.
